Softball Explodes for 15 Runs Against Le Moyne; Splits a Pair of Games to Begin NFCA DII Leadoff Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Embry-Riddle softball team found some much-needed firepower on Friday as the Eagles put up 15 runs against Le Moyne, the most in a single game since March 13, 2018 against USC Aiken. ERAU (7-6) downed the Dolphins (1-3) by a final of 15-3 in only five innings. However, the team dropped its first contest of the tournament, a 4-1 loss in a rematch with RV Wingate (13-4). All games were held at the South Commons Complex.

GAME 1 | RV WIngate - 4, Embry-Riddle - 1

Shelby Morse was dealing in the circle early on as the freshman pitcher rung up two batters in the first inning. Base hits from Mia Macchia and Karina Ortiz-Munoz gave Embry-Riddle a scoring opportunity in the bottom half of the inning with one out, but a double play stalled the team's momentum.

In the next half inning, a blast to left field narrowly stayed inside the foul pole for a Wingate solo home run.

Another prime scoring opportunity appeared in the bottom of the fourth when Ortiz-Munoz led off with a double to the right center fence, but her effort went without reward as she was left stranded on third.

WU accumulated two more runs in the top of the fifth from two singles and two errors. Although, it could have been much worse. With the bases loaded and no outs, a Bulldog singled to left field, or so she thought. After the play, the batter was ruled out for stepping outside the batter's box on the swing.

Embry-Riddle got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth due to a couple of Wingate miscues. Kerry O'Sullivan entered the game as a pinch hitter to start the frame. She struck out swinging but was able to reach base because the strike-three pitch went between the catcher's legs for a passed ball. A sacrifice bunt from Isabelle Bonn followed by a stolen base had O'Sullivan on third with one out. A second passed ball then allowed the freshman to easily come home for the Eagles' first run.

Another Bulldog moonshot in the seventh put Embry-Riddle behind even further at 4-1, but not all hope was lost. The bottom half of the inning began with a bloop double to shallow center by pinch hitter Leah Oberkehr. Ashton Aycock then stepped in and earned a walk on a lengthy at-bat to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs. There was no doubt that Mahaliyah Sandridge was looking to tie the game in one swing. She loaded up and unleashed a deep ball to center field that sent the fielder into a scramble. Sadly, the ball was caught just feet in front of the outfield wall, ending the game.

Ortiz-Munoz led the Blue and Gold in hitting with a spotless line of 2-for-2, her second multi-hit game of the year. Shelby Morse (1-5) was tagged with the loss. She threw six strong innings and only allowed one earned run off of five hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Ava Domenici took over in the circle at the start of the seventh and gave up a run, one hit, two walks, and a strikeout.

It was the Eagles first-ever loss to the Bulldogs. ERAU took the prior two matchups.

GAME 2 | Le Moyne - 3, Embry-Riddle - 15

In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, Embry-Riddle left a first impression so impactful that the Dolphins might hope to never see the Blue and Gold again. A 15-run outburst powered by a nine-run fourth inning was just the offensive awakening the Eagles needed.

ERAU wasted no time getting the bats going as Sandridge started the bottom of the first with a double and Delaney Morgan soon followed with the team's first triple of the year.

In the second, the bats continued to stay hot when Embry-Riddle brought four Eagles home in the inning. RBI singles from Mallory Kinahan and Macchia allowed Bonn and Oberkehr to race home. Additional run support was received from the next batter, Ortiz-Munoz, when she unloaded on a pitch and sent it to right field. Trying to stretch it into a triple, Ortiz-Munoz slid into third with the expectation that it would be a close play. Unbeknownst to her, the second baseman sailed the throw way over the third baseman's head, which allowed Ortiz-Munoz to score the Eagles' sixth unanswered run.

The floodgates opened in the fifth. Twelve batters appeared at the plate to put up nine runs from four hits and three walks. Macchia, Ortiz-Munoz, Morse, Katriana Bain, Oberkehr, and Sandridge all earned RBIs in the frame while Kinahan, Sandridge, Macchia, Morgan, Ortiz-Munoz, Emma Wood, and Bain all worked their way around the bases. The inning was so long that Kinahan actually scored two times before the third out. A three-run home run by Sandridge concluded the scoring, giving ERAU a large 15-0 cushion.

Le Moyne attempted to start a rally in the bottom of the fifth. An error and two singles brought two Dolphins home to score. With two runners on, LMC attempted a double steal. However, Bain capitalized on the opportunity to throw a base runner out when she tossed the ball down to third in time to apply the tag.

Le Moyne did manage to add a third run, but that was all the damage they could do.

Both Sandridge and Ortiz-Munoz tallied multiple hits. Sandridge went 3-for-4 and matched her career high in runs and RBIs with three each. The junior became the first Eagle this season to score three runs in a single game. Also, her home run in the fourth was her sixth-career blast, tying her with Kassidy Simons for the sixth-most in program history.

As for Ortiz-Munoz, she went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, both matching her career bests. Her triple in the third was her third three-bagger of her career, which is tied for the seventh-most all time. Ortiz-Munozes' reached-base streak now stands at 11 games. In the field, the junior notched nine putouts on the day, advancing her even further up the program's all-time putouts list to sixth with 318, just past Haleigh Lewis (317).

Kinahan (4-1) went the distance in the circle, limiting the Dolphins to one earned run on six hits and two walks with a trio of whiffs.

The Eagles conclude the NFCA DII Leadoff Classic tomorrow with games against Carson-Newman (3 p.m.) and No. 18 Lincoln Memorial (5:30 p.m.). It's the first time ERAU has faced either program.
