SAINT LEO, Fla. – The 16th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team was unable to get by third-ranked Saint Leo on Tuesday, falling to the Lions 5-2. The loss puts the Eagles at 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the Sunshine State Conference, while the Lions improve to 1-0 overall and in the league.
The Lions took an early one-point lead by winning two of three doubles matches. At the top spot 15th-ranked Marta Vicens Miquel and Lavinia Lancellotti topped No. 24
Itxaso Blanco and
Carla Cabero del Hierro, 6-4, while Luzia Obermeier and Kamilya Shallina downed
Sabrina Ehrenfort and
Maja Issler 6-1 at No. 2. The Eagles'
Jessica Christa Wira Hadipoernomo and
Kaylee Kirivong avoided the doubles sweep with a 7-5 win over Camilla Keller and Jade Bellegy on court three.
The Lions went up 2-0 following Shallina's 6-3, 6-3 win against Wira Hadipoernomo at No. 4 singles. Ehrenfort got a point back for the Eagles with her 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Celina Ermann at the fifth spot. After besting ninth-ranked Vicens Miquel 7-6 (4) in the first set, 20th-ranked Blanco took a 2-1 lead in the second before the Lions' top-flight player retired with an injury, drawing the match level at 2-2.
Saint Leo managed to pick up the points they needed for the win when Obermeier held off Issler 6-4, 7-6 (4) at No. 2 and Keller topped
Alessia Tripaldelli 6-3, 6-4 on court six.
The Eagles' run through the gauntlet of the top three teams in NCAA II concludes on Saturday when they travel to Fort Lauderdale for a 2 p.m. match against No. 2 Nova Southeastern.
