Dramatic Finishes Continue as Softball Grabs Two Wins on Friday; Turns Triple Play in Walk-Off Victory Over Battlers

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Dramatic endings have been a constant for the Embry-Riddle softball team of late as the Eagles earned another walk-off win on Friday night, beating Alderson Broaddus 4-3 after downing Queens (N.Y.) 8-0 earlier in the day. It was ERAU's fourth walk-off of the season and third over the past two days.

On top of that, Embry-Riddle (14-10) matched single-game records in doubles (5) and sacrifice flies (3) against the Knights (1-5) and then turned a rare triple play against the Battlers (3-13). Mia Macchia also tied a program record with three stolen bases in the nightcap.

GAME 1 | Queens - 0, Embry-Riddle - 8 (6 Inn.)

In the first ever meeting between the two programs, this game was all Eagles from start to finish. Delaney Morgan grabbed the spotlight in the field early on with her sliding grab out in center to help retire the Knights in order.

The Blue and Gold offense then stole the show with four runs in the bottom of the first from four hits, three of which were for extra bases. Mahaliyah Sandridge started with a leadoff single and came around to score along with Macchia when Lauren Latoria blasted her first triple of the season to right center. Soon after, Karina Ortiz-Munoz sent a blooper into left that she stretched into a double. Latoria was able to easily touch home. Kelsey Kressler put the icing on the cake with a sacrifice fly to right that Ortiz-Munoz used to score Embry-Riddle's fourth run.

Defensively, the Eagles kept chugging along. Starting pitcher Shelby Morse prevented the Battlers from even reaching base through the first three innings with a trio of strikeouts.

An RBI single from Macchia in the fourth pushed Sandridge in to score her second run and Embry-Riddle's fifth.

One frame later, a sixth run was added when Morgan started the inning with a double, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Raissa Bianco.

In the sixth, the Eagles locked up the win with an RBI double by Ortiz-Munoz, her second of the game, and another sacrifice fly by Bianco to score the winning run in Latoria.

Latoria was just a home run away from hitting for the cycle as she went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBIs, setting season highs in all three. Sandridge contributed two hits in three at-bats with three runs, the third time this season the junior touched home on three occasions, while Ortiz-Munoz notched a pair of doubles, a run and two RBIs. Also of note, Bianco grabbed a season-best two RBIs from her two sac flies.

Morse (4-7) earned the win by limiting Queens to just one hit over five innings with a career-high six strikeouts. Ava Domenici made an appearance in the circle in the sixth. She kept the shutout intact by allowing only a hit and a walk.

GAME 2 | Alderson Broaddus - 3, Embry-Riddle - 4

After the Eagles beat the Battlers in the bottom of the eighth with a bases-loaded walk on Wednesday, Friday's rematch was another thrilling affair.

Alderson Broaddus was the more aggressive team at the plate to start. A hit batter and two singles scored the opening run in the second and put runners on the corners with no outs. ERAU needed only one play to get out of the inning. Pitcher Emma Wood fielded a ground ball and tossed it to Sandridge, who was on third, to tag the runner. The shortstop then chucked it to Bianco on second, who tagged out the Battler attempting to advance from first. At the same time, Kerry O'Sullivan snuck over to first from right field and caught a pass from Bianco to tag out the runner on first for an unconventional triple play because she was off the base.

Double plays were then popping up everywhere. The Eagles grounded into one in the bottom half of the inning but returned the favor in the third when Sandridge tagged a runner out and threw to second for a force out.

Though Embry-Riddle was down 1-0, the deficit was short lived. The first four Eagles reached base in the bottom of the third. Bianco walked, O'Sullivan singled with a bunt, and Sandridge and Macchia produced RBI base knocks to gain a 2-1 lead. That lead increased shortly after when Macchia baited a throw on her attempt to steal second, which allowed Sandridge to score a third run.

In the fourth, Kressler held down the hot corner, stopping three ground balls to retire the Battlers in order.

Another double play then occurred in the fifth as Sandridge tagged second and threw to Ortiz-Munoz at first to eliminate the leadoff single.

Unfortunately, mother nature eventually affected the outcome of this contest. The rain began to fall hard at the start of the seventh. Eventually, the tying run reached base with one out, and it forced Embry-Riddle to make a pitching change. In came Mallory Kinahan in an attempt to record the save. However, the inadequate conditions made it difficult for the Eagle ace to properly grip the ball and control her pitches. The first Battler she faced struck out swinging, but then two wild pitches and a passed ball tied the game at 3-3.

Thankfully, ERAU didn't give up. Katriana Bain started the bottom of the seventh with a double, the only extra-base hit of the game for either squad, and scored three batters later on a single by Sandridge to right field, the third time this season she brought home the winning run.

Sandridge stayed hot at the dish by going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.

In her first start in the circle, Wood lasted 6.1 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Kinahan (7-3) was credited with the win after she recorded two outs and issued a walk with one strikeout.

Sandridge's three assists moved her up into a tie for seventh on the program's all-time list with 114. Additionally, Ortiz-Munoz jumped to fourth on the all-time putouts list with 399.

Embry-Riddle has another pair of games tomorrow, starting with a 4:30 p.m. matchup with Hillsdale followed by a rematch with Queens at 7 p.m.
