Softball Stalls Offensively Against No. 20 Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team was only able to produce two hits against No. 20 Saint Leo, and the Eagles (15-12, 2-5 Sunshine State Conference) fell 3-0 to the Lions (26-3, 9-1 SSC) on Thursday afternoon at the University Softball Stadium. Saint Leo entered the series with one of the best pitching staffs in the country as the Lions ranked first in the NCAA II in WHIP (0.81) and second in ERA (0.95).

A walk by Mia Macchia in the top of the first would be the Eagles' only baserunner for the first three innings as the Blue and Gold struggled to produce anything against Saint Leo's ace Kayla Betts, who possessed the lowest WHIP (0.44) and third-lowest ERA (0.26) in the division.

Starting pitcher Mallory Kinahan matched Betts' success in the first by striking out the first batter to help retire the Lions in order.

A messy second inning put Embry-Riddle into a 3-0 hole after three hits, three errors, two wild pitches, and a passed ball brought a trio of Lions around to score.

The Eagles rebounded defensively in the third, though, as Kinahan rang up a pair of batters, and catcher Katriana Bain nailed a baserunner attempting to steal second for the final out. Kinahan kept Saint Leo hitless from that point on until she was pulled from the circle after the fifth inning.

Karina Ortiz-Munoz recorded the ERAU's first hit in the fourth on a single up the middle, but she was left on base.

Embry-Riddle managed to put a batter on base in each of the next two innings with a walk issued to Bain and a single through the right side by Lauren Latoria, but all runners were left stranded.

Ava Domenici entered to pitch in the bottom of the sixth. She kept the Lions from adding to their run total by retiring the side in order with a pair of strikeouts, giving the freshman seven strikeouts over her last four innings of work.

Sadly, the Eagles went down quietly in the seventh and were shut out for only the third time in 2023.

Latoria and Ortiz-Munoz were the only members of the Blue and Gold to record hits in the contest.

Kinahan (8-4) was handed the loss after allowing three runs, all unearned, on three hits and five walks with four strikeouts. Ava Domenici had a clean inning of relief with a pair of strikeouts.

Both squads return to the diamond on Friday for a noon doubleheader to close out the series.
