Softball Drops Series-Opener to Panthers 8-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team lost the first game of the series against Florida Tech 8-1 on Friday afternoon at Radiology Associates Field. The Panthers (17-17, 7-9 Sunshine State Conference) seemingly found every defensive hole in the field as they produced 11 hits compared to the Eagles' (16-14, 3-7 SSC) five. Fielding miscues also played a part in the result. ERAU recorded four errors, just the third time this season the Blue and Gold tallied four or more. On a positive note, Embry-Riddle did not strike out in the contest for the second time in 2023.

This is the fourth consecutive occasion in the all-time series Florida Tech won the series opener.

It was a promising start to the game after starting pitcher Mallory Kinahan and the Eagle defense retired the Panthers in order in the first. Mia Macchia then led off the bottom half of the inning with a base knock. She stole second, and Mahaliyah Sandridge followed with a walk to put two runners on with no outs, but an inning-ending double play thwarted the scoring threat.

An error coupled with a walk and two singles put Florida Tech on the scoreboard first in the second inning with a run.

Another leadoff single, this time by Delaney Morgan, led to another scoring opportunity after the sophomore swiped second. However, she was left stranded on base.

This trend would continue as the Blue and Gold managed to put the leadoff batter on base for each of the first five frames but were unable to break into the run column.

A messy top of the fifth pushed the Eagles' deficit to 6-0 when the Panthers strung together two singles, a double, and a triple along with a fielding error to score five times.

Embry-Riddle eventually broke the shutout in the sixth. A defensive miscue allowed Leah Oberkehr to reach first. The freshman moved to third on a wild pitch and groundout before Sandridge brought her home with a single to left field.

Four more hits and an error led to an additional two runs for Florida Tech in the sixth to put ERAU down 8-1, the last of the scoring.

Five Eagles recorded a hit in the contest (Macchia, Sandridge, Morgan, Emma Wood, and Karina Ortiz-Munoz). Oberkehr picked up a run and Sandridge grabbed her team-high 16th RBI.

Kinahan (9-5) took the loss. She lasted five innings in the circle and allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Wood took over in the sixth and gave up two runs, one earned, off of four hits. She also struck out a pair of Panthers in the seventh.

The two teams return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
