MELBOURNE, Florida - The Embry-Riddle baseball team snapped its nine-game conference skid on Sunday behind dominant pitching, downing Florida Tech in the series finale, 4-2. The Eagles (13-14, 3-9 SSC) scored tow runs in the first and never trailed, getting a fantastic start from
Dillon Moran, followed by strong relief work from
Spencer Marinac and
Joe Balsam to secure the victory over Florida Tech (18-11, 7-5 SSC).
Embry-Riddle used two hits and a walk in the first frame to go up 2-0.
Camden Traficante singled to start the Eagle rally, followed by a base on balls drawn by
Garrett Bogart.
Timo Aracena's single to left scored the game's first run and allowed Bogart to move to third.
AJ Marinello collected the first of his two RBIs on the afternoon with a sac fly ro right, plating Bogart for a 2-0 Eagle lead.
Moran allowed his only run of the day in the bottom of the first, but limited the damage to just the single run, keeping ERAU in front by striking out the final batter of the frame.
Moran and FT starter Dylan Cleveland settled into a pitcher's duel following the first inning, with only one runner reaching scoring position until the fourth.
After Cleveland had registered two outs in the top of the fourth frame
Robert Post doubled down the right field line, scoring when
Jeremy Kennedy-Davis singled to left center and pushing the Eagle lead to 3-1.
Moran went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the fourth, doing the same in the fifth, but ran into trouble in the sixth. A single, followed by a stolen base and wild pitch, put a Panther at third with no outs, and Moran issued a walk to the next FT batter. Moran then struck out back-to-back batters before getting a pinch hitter to fly out to center to escape the jam, bringing ERAU back into the dugout with a two-run lead.
Marinac started the seventh for the Blue and Gold, working around a couple singles and an Eagle error to keep the Panthers to just one run, and his offense immediately got it back when Marinello singled home Traficante in the eighth for a 4-2 Eagle cushion.
Marinac faced the minimum in the eighth before giving way to Balsam in the ninth and the Eagle closer got a couple of ground outs and a fly out to secure the win and his third save of the year, 15th of his career.
Moran (2-3) worked 6.0 innings, allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Balsam's 15th career save puts him in a tie for third (Kevin Hawkins) all-time in program history.
Traficante and Post each had two hits on the day, while Marinello picked up two RBIs for ERAU.
Embry-Riddle returns to Sliwa Stadium to host Lynn next weekend in a crucial SSC series. First pitch on Friday is slated for 6 p.m.
