DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Five fourth-quarter goals lifted the 18th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team to a 14-9 win over Sunshine State Conference foe Florida Tech, Saturday at the Embry-Riddle Lacrosse Stadium. The Eagles outscored the Panthers (8-4, 0-2) 5-1 in the final 15 minutes of play to improve to 10-1 on the year and 1-0 in league play.
After
Kenley Zeruto netted the first goal of the game, the Panthers rattled off three scores in a row to go up 3-1 with 4:17 left in the first quarter. Following the Panthers' third goal, Squire won the draw and took the ball all the way to the goal to make it a one-goal game. The next draw also went to the Eagles with
Ellie Daily picking up the ball. The Eagles found Squire and once again, the sophomore's individual effort led to a goal, leveling the score at 3-3. The Eagles weren't finished, however, as after a pair of missed shots,
Anna Maurer collected the ball and scored a goal of her own to put the Eagles up 4-3 heading into the second quarter.
The start of the second period featured Eagle goals from Maurer and
Maile Kuo, whose first goal of the season extended the lead to 6-3. The Panthers had an answer, however, scoring three goals in the final 7:15 to tie the game at the half.
The third quarter featured another 3-2 scoring margin, this time in favor of the Eagles who outscored the Panthers 3-2 to take a 9-8 edge into the final frame.
The fourth period was all Embry-Riddle.
Alexa Zeruto finished a pass from
Kenley Zeruto less than 30 seconds in to give the Eagles a two-goal lead. The Panthers managed to cut that lead in half with 11:58 remaining in the game, but that is the last time they would find the back of the net. After
Alexa Zeruto reclaimed the two-goal advantage for the Blue and Gold at the 8:24 mark, ERAU got two more goals from Squire and another from
Samantha Reich to seal the win.
The Eagles continue conference play on Wednesday when they make the short trip to Winter Park to take on No. 10 Rollins. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
