Baseball Falls to Sailfish 9-7 in Extras

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A two-run home run in the bottom of the tenth inning by Palm Beach Atlantic handed the Embry-Riddle baseball team a loss in the series opener by a score of 9-7. A four-run sixth inning allowed the Eagles (18-18, 6-13 Sunshine State Conference) to take a 7-4 lead over the home team, but the Sailfish (17-20, 5-14 SSC) erased their deficit with three runs in the eighth to eventually send the game into extras and earn a walk-off win.

PBA started the scoring with a solo shot and an RBI groundout in the second inning. Embry-Riddle matched that total in the following frame when Alex Britton reached base with a single to left center and then scored from first on a fielding error from the center fielder. Next up was AJ Marinello, who singled through the right side to plate Camden Traficante and tie the game.

Unfortunately, a single and double in the bottom half of the inning put the Blue and Gold back down 3-2.

The Sailfish added a fourth run in the fourth on the same combination of plays, but ERAU reduced the deficit back to one in the fifth when Dylan Brazil started with a single, stole second, and then scored on a base knock by Britton.

Embry-Riddle surged ahead one inning later, using bases-loaded walks issued to Kevin Vittoria and Britton, as well as an RBI single from Brazil and a sacrifice fly by Traficante, to take a 7-4 lead.

That lead lasted only two innings, however, as Palm Beach Atlantic knotted things up in the eighth with an RBI single, bases-loaded base on balls, and wild pitch that brought the tying run in to score.

With both teams unable to score in the ninth, the game headed to extras where a two-run blast in the bottom of the tenth by the Sailfish concluded the contest.

Over one-third of the Eagles' 11 hits came from the last two slots in the batting order in Timo Aracena and Brazil. They were two of the four different members of the Blue and Gold to record multi-hit performances, along with Britton and Bogart. Britton also picked up two RBIs and a run, Brazil tallied one run and one RBI, and Bogart earned a run as well.

Dillon Moran got the nod in game one of the series. He lasted five innings and allowed four runs off of nine hits and no walks. The sophomore also rang up two batters. Spencer Marinac (1-1) was credited with the loss after giving up two runs on two hits with three strikeouts.

The two teams return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader at noon.
