DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – No. 34 Embry-Riddle won the doubles point and four of six singles matches to topple No. 27 Florida Southern 5-2 in Sunshine State Conference play, Thursday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The win improved the Eagles' overall record to 11-9 and their league record to 2-4. The Mocs fell to 14-8 overall and 2-5 in the SSC with the loss.
Michele Iftimie and
Lukas Schneider quickly picked up the first win of the day, downing Rajakar and Mario Garoz 6-1 on court two. The Mocs were able to pull even with the Eagles courtesy of Inaki Braun Simo and Danny Thomas' 6-4 win against
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo and
Fernando Alonso at No. 3. The match at No. 1 doubles pitted eighth-ranked Chris Fok Kow and Matteo Feggi against No. 36
Alexis Guedy and
Luke Paschal. A back-and-forth battle led to a 6-6 tie and the Eagle pair won the tiebreaker 7-4 to give ERAU a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
Iftimie was equally efficient in singles as he was in doubles dispatching Braun Simo 6-1, 6-1 at the second position. Playing next to him at the top spot, Guedy downed Fok Kow 6-1, 6-3 to put the Blue and Gold up 3-0.
Playing at No. 5,
Lukas Schneider was down late in the first set, but rallied to take the set 6-4 and won the second by the same score to record the clinching point.
The Eagles' fifth point of the day came in the form a three-set win for Diaz Rodrigo who held off Alex Fascio 6-3, 6-7 (2), 10-6.
The Eagles will play their final match of the regular season on Saturday when they host Palm Beach Atlantic at 11:30 a.m. the Crotty Tennis Complex.
