Softball Struggles to Convert on Scoring Opportunities in Loss to RV Sharks

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Despite tallying 10 hits and hitting .357 in the game, the Embry-Riddle softball team was only able to manufacture one run in a 3-1 series-opening loss to RV Nova Southeastern at the AD Griffin Sports Complex. It was the eighth time in 2023 the Eagles were able to reach double digits in the hit column, but every other opportunity led to the team scoring at least five runs, which would have been enough for this win on this occasion. ERAU was just 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

The loss snaps the program's five-game winning streak and its three-game winning streak against the Sharks.

The Eagle bats were warmed up and ready to go in the first as both Mia Macchia and reigning SSC Player of the Week Delaney Morgan recorded base hits. However, with one out and two on, Lauren Latoria laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners over, but Macchia took off for home on the throw to first and was narrowly tagged out trying to score.

NSU then grabbed the lead in its first opportunity when the Sharks scored off a double and fielding error at first.

Embry-Riddle continued to produce at the plate, though, and eventually tied the game in the third. Macchia notched her second hit of the game and moved to third when Morgan also captured her second single. Now with two outs, Lauren Latoria grounded a pitch up the middle of the infield and just past the diving shortstop to allow Macchia to score with ease. At that point, the Eagles were averaging two hits per inning.

Sadly, the Sharks went back ahead in the bottom half of the inning. A hit batter and a single had two on with one out. A wild pitch allowed the runner on third to score while the next hitter followed with a bunt to the pitcher. Mallory Kinahan tried to quickly toss the ball to Isabelle Bonn at the plate, but the runner just beat the throw, putting ERAU behind 3-1. Not all was negative in the frame as Bonn did toss out Alexis Smith, who had the third most stolen bases in the conference, trying to swipe second.

Even though the Blue and Gold recorded a hit in each of the final three innings, ERAU was unable to add to its run column.

Both Macchia and Morgan tied their season highs in hits with three, the third time this year both were able to accumulate a trio of base knocks in a game. Macchia's performance also improved her reached-base streak to 11 contests.

Every Eagle put the ball in play during every trip to the plate as the team didn't record any walks or strikeouts, the third time in 2023 no members of the Blue and Gold were sent down on strikes.

Kinahan (12-6) was credited with the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits and no walks with two strikeouts. It was just the first time in the sophomore's previous three starts she allowed multiple earned runs.

A 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday between the two squads will conclude the series.
