Fixen and Maurer Set Multiple Program Records in No. 18 Women’s Lacrosse’s Upset of No. 13 Lynn on Senior Day

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - No. 18 Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse celebrated its eight seniors in a big way Saturday afternoon with a 15-9 upset of No. 13 Lynn at the ERAU Lacrosse Stadium. Ericka Kimble, Stela Chepenik, Zoe Mullins, Anna Maurer, Kristina Longo, Paige Jones, Ellie Daily, and Sydney Bonbrest were all honored during the pregame senior ceremony. However, there was one senior in particular who stole the show on the field.

Maurer assisted on 10 goals, besting the previous single-game program record by two. In the process, the Longmeadow, Massachusetts, native also set new single-season and career assist program records with 36 in 2023 and 64 over three seasons, though all of those came within the last two years.

The attacker wasn't the only member of the Blue and Gold setting records as goalkeeper Aubrey Fixen posted a new single-season saves mark for the program. Her 14 stops against the Fighting Knights were tied for the third most in a single game by an Eagle, bringing the sophomore to 110 on the year, three more than her total in 2022 which was the previous program record. Not only that, but the Palos Verdes, California, native received her 11th win of the season, also a program record.

Both squads spent most of the first quarter getting a feel for each other as neither were able to break into the scoring column for the first 10 minutes and 36 seconds. Finally, the Eagles (11-2, 2-1 Sunshine State Conference) started the scoring when Maurer ran behind the net to the right side and found Alexa Zeruto curling around in front of the crease. Her pass led to a quick shot and top-shelf score.

Lynn (10-4, 1-2 SSC) responded less than a minute later, but the Maurer-to-Sallie Squire connection put ERAU back ahead 3-1 with two goals in a 44-second span. On both occasions, Maurer set up behind the net while Squire sprinted through a gap in the middle of the arc and scored from point-blank range.

Thirty seconds later, Alexa Zeruto mimicked her first goal by curling around on the right side to grab a second goal to put the Eagles up 4-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Two scores by Lynn in the first two minutes of the second quarter cut Embry-Riddle's lead to one, but Samantha Reich sprinted toward the net on the left side, received a pass from Maurer, and shot it over the goal line for some breathing room for the Eagles with 7:43 remaining.

The Fighting Knights reverted ERAU's lead back to one with 6:08 left in the second, but the Eagles then went on a 4-0 run over the following fifteen minutes. Both Kenley Zeruto and Reich found space right in front of the crease to convert on scoring opportunities to close out the half.

After halftime, Squire picked up her 11th hat trick of the year with her third and fourth goals of the game, vaulting Embry-Riddle ahead 9-4.

Lynn cut that lead down to 9-6 with two woman-down goals in a 32-second timeframe, but the Blue and Gold also had back-to-back scores with 5:39 and 3:47 left in the third. This time Maurer was on the receiving end of a pass from behind the net as she handed the ball off to Alexa Zeruto and cut around on the left side in front of the net, caught the pass, and quickly scored. Kimble then earned her first goal of the season when Maurer floated it over the net, and the senior reached her stick as high as it could go to grab the pass and put a shot through on the right side.

A Fighting Knights' goal with 12 seconds left on the clock gave Lynn a slight bit of momentum entering the final quarter, but Embry-Riddle dominated the period early on, picking up three goals in the first nine minutes. Squire started the run when she attacked on the left side, spun toward the middle, and rifled a shot through the bottom left corner. Reich and Madison Ellwood also picked up goals during the stretch of scoring.

Squire capped off the impressive offensive performance by the Blue and Gold with her sixth goal with 1:44 left in the contest.

Squire's six scores were tied for the seventh-most in a single game in program history and were a season high for the sophomore while her eight draw controls matched her most in a game in 2023. She also grabbed a team-best four ground balls.

Reich earned her fifth hat trick of the year thanks to her three-goal outing while Alexa Zeruto tallied a pair of goals and assists.

Fixen (11-2) corralled 14 shots and allowed nine goals in her 60 minutes in the crease.

The Eagles avenged last year's 16-15 loss to the Fighting Knights with Saturday's win and tied the all-time series up at 1-1.

Embry-Riddle is back at home on Wednesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. when Palm Beach Atlantic travels to Daytona Beach for the Eagles' last night game of the regular season.
