DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - The Embry-Riddle baseball team registered its biggest win of the 2023 season on Thursday afternoon, exploding for a 15-0 shutout of third-ranked Rollins in the two teams' series opener. The Eagles (23-23, 10-18 SSC) knocked off the Tars (34-14, 22-6 SSC) thanks to a huge offensive output, led by
Garrett Bogart's day at the plate, and a second-straight series-opening shutout from a trio of Eagle pitchers, led by starter
Spencer Marinac. The 15 runs by ERAU marked its largest offensive total of the year, and is the biggest shutout of the Blue and Gold's NCAA era.
Marinac, getting his third start of the year, was magnificent in five frames, surrendering just one hit and one walk to the potent Tar offense, getting 19 harmless fly balls before
Gunnar Harrison and
Tyler Stufano covered the final four frames, preserving the shutout. All told, the Eagle trio held the visitors to just four hits, allowing a Rollins runner to get to scoring position just three times all day.
The hosts would get the only run it would need in the first when Bogart hit a sac fly ot right center, plating
Camden Traficante for a 1-0 lead.
Dylan Brazil put on a clinic in the outfield in the top of the second, making three highlight reel plays to keep the Eagles in front, and ERAU would score five times in the third to put the game away early.
Three Tar errors, along with a couple of walks and an
AJ Marinello single, allowed two Eagles to score in the third before Bogart clobbered his first Sliwa Stadium homer, a three-run shot to left, doubling the lead to 6-0.
ERAU added multiple runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh, never allowing a Rollins reliever to get comfortable on the mound.
Alex Britton, Traficante and
Robert Post each collected RBIs in the fourth to really put the game away at 9-0, but Traficante added two more RBIs to his season total with a double to right, scoring both Britton and Brazil in the fifth for an 11-0 lead.
After Harrison worked a scoreless top of the sixth in relief of Marinac the Blue and Gold got two more runs in the sixth when Brazil reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Bogart from third, and then when the ball was thrown away,
Josh Reynolds touched home, making it 13-0 in favor of the home team.
Harrison rolled up a double play in the seventh and the final two Eagle runs were scored in the next half-inning, the first on a
Chase Bruno single up the middle to score Britton, and the second on a Post double to right center, plating Marinello.
Stufano worked around a single in the eighth and then went 1-2-3 in the ninth to ice the contest.
The Eagles collected a dozen hits and 13 RBIs, the most of the season, with Bogart's 2-for-3 day with four RBIs and two runs scored leading the charge. Britton scored four runs, while Traficante drove in three and Post finished with two RBIs.
The Eagles and Tars meet for game two tomorrow, Friday, May 12 at 1 p.m.
