Volleyball Kicks Off Bahama House Labor Day Classic With Pair of Victories

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team began the 2023 season with a bang, capturing victories against Emmanuel (0-1) and RV Augusta (1-1) on Friday at the Bahama House Labor Day Classic inside the ICI Center.

Overall, the Eagles (2-0) held the opposition to a .175 hit percentage on the night. Both Jaden McBride and Grace Datil went two-for-two in double-doubles. McBride tallied 35 kills and 32 digs while Datil earned 62 assists and 25 digs.

Eagles vs. Emmanuel

It was the first ever match between the two programs, and the Lions had the upper hand early. Though the Eagles raced out to a 5-2 advantage partly thanks to a pair of Emmanuel attacking errors, the Lions responded by claiming eight of the next nine points to push the Blue and Gold behind 10-6.

The two sides went back and forth before ERAU strung together a trio of tallies to reduce the deficit to 18-16. However, with the score now 19-17, Emmanuel went on a 5-0 run and eventually claimed set one 25-18.

Thankfully, the Eagles rallied to take the ensuing two sets. In set two, McBride led the charge with three of Embry-Riddle's first five points. The 5-3 five advantage eventually grew to 23-11 due to an 8-1 spurt by the home team, and the Eagles were able to close the second set out 25-15.

Embry-Riddle rode that momentum into the third set by once again jumping out to an early lead, this time 6-2. Isabella Rujano was responsible for each of the team's first three points thanks to well-placed kills. As the set carried on, the Blue and Gold continued to pad its advantage all the way up to a nine-point lead at the end of the set (25-16).

As per usual, Embry-Riddle opened strong in set four, seeming to indicate a victory was easily in hand as ERAU was up 6-1 to start. However, the Lions fought back and eventually tied the match at two sets a piece with the 25-21 victory.

In the decisive fifth set, Embry-Riddle held a slim 7-6 lead before three McBride kills helped launch the squad out in front to a 14-7 match point that it would soon capture.

The Eagles showed strong defensive play in the match, holding Emmanuel to a sub-.100 hit percentage in three sets.

McBride paced the squad with 21 kills and 15 digs while Rujano followed with a career-high 13 kills. Datil also earned a double-double, notching 44 assists and 15 digs in her first collegiate match. Tamzen Wilson (26), Gabriela Pagan (11), and Hunter Ackerman (11) also recorded double-digit digs.

Eagles vs. Augusta

The ICI Center was packed for the all-anticipated nightcap, and the Eagle faithful were needed to help the Eagles overcome Augusta, a program that is receiving votes in the preseason poll and reached the second round of the NCAA II Tournament in 2022.

ERAU opened with an impressive .389 hit percentage to claim set one 25-22. The high attack percentage was largely due to the fact that the Eagles went without an attacking error for the entire set. Neither team was able to create much separation as the largest lead of the set was three points.

Set two saw Embry-Riddle jump out to yet another early lead (7-3) thanks to three Jaguar miscues. With the score at 8-6 Eagles, ERAU rattled off seven consecutive points as Ashley Lunt was seemingly going to serve forever. Augusta concocted its own run, scoring six of seven points to close the gap to 18-16. The Jaguars did manage to get within a point of the Eagles. However, Ackerman carried the team in the final rallies with two kills to aid her team on a 3-0 run to go up two sets to none.

This time it was Augusta who had the upper hand in set three, leading 6-2 out of the gate. The Blue and Gold did create a 5-0 run to tie the set at 13 all, but Augusta pulled away, ending the set on a 5-0 spurt to claim it 25-18.

The fourth set was close early on until McBride produced three consecutive aces to assist the Eagles to a 9-3 advantage. The Jaguars used yet another 5-0 streak to level the score at 17-17, but Embry-Riddle managed to close out the win with kills by McBride and Rujano to seal the victory with a 25-22 set win.

Embry-Riddle doubled up Augusta in aces (10-5) and nearly did so with blocks (9-5). In just her second collegiate match, Kailey Hrbek picked up eight total blocks. McBride (14 kills, 17 digs) and Datil (18 assists, 10 digs) tallied their second double-double in as many matches while Devyn Petrowski earned her first with 24 assists and 12 digs.

Embry-Riddle concludes the Bahama House Labor Day Classic with two more matches on Saturday. The Eagles face Drury at 2:30 p.m. followed by No. 20 Wingate at 7 p.m.
