Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches to Close Out Bahama House Labor Day Classic

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Strong defensive play allowed the Embry-Riddle volleyball team to sweep Drury 3-0 on Saturday at the Bahama House Labor Day Classic. However, in the battle for the de facto championship between two undefeated squads, miscues caused the Eagles (3-1) to falter to No. 20 Wingate (4-0) by a score of 3-0.

It was the first-ever meeting between Embry-Riddle and Drury while it was the Eagles' second contest in as many years against the Bulldogs.

Eagles vs. Drury

The Eagles' stout defense carried over into Saturday as ERAU held Drury (0-4) to just an .089 hit percentage. At the same time, the Blue and Gold had no trouble finding success on offense, using a .310 hit percentage to claim the first set 25-17. Midway through, the Eagles were up 10-9 before the home team strung together ten consecutive points with three coming from Hunter Ackerman kills to put Embry-Riddle ahead 20-9. Though the Panthers did manage to go on a 5-1 run immediately after, the Eagles still possessed a lengthy seven-point lead and held on from there.

Set two was tightly contested. A 15-10 Eagle lead was erased when Drury rattled off seven points in a row, four of which were from ERAU attacking errors. However, three Panther miscues put the Eagles back ahead 18-17. Drury used a pair of three-point streaks to take a 23-20 advantage, but Embry-Riddle used a Kailey Hrbek kill to help tie the set at 23 all. The Blue and Gold fought off three set points by the Panthers before closing the set on a 3-0 run with a kill and, lastly, an ace by Jaden McBride to win 28-26.

Three Panther attacking errors helped launch Embry-Riddle out to a 5-1 lead. Drury slowly chipped away at the Eagle advantage before taking its first lead of the set since the opening point when the Panthers went on a 6-1 run to go up by two points at 17-15. Fortunately, another trio of Drury attacking miscues started a five-point run that set ERAU ahead 20-17. Drury nearly mimicked the Eagles' scoring stretch by earning four unanswered points to retake the lead 21-20. A few points later, Embry-Riddle trailed 22-21 before kills by Hrbek, Ackerman, and Isabella Rujano aided the Eagles to a 25-22 third-set win and the first sweep of the season.

Ackerman paced the squad offensively with 13 kills, combining that with 10 digs for her first career double-double. Additionally, Rujano added 10 kills while Grace Datil led the team in assists (22) and Tamzen Wilson set the top mark in digs (13).

Eagles vs. No. 20 Wingate

The match went Embry-Riddle's way early on as the Eagles used a trio of three-point spurts to double up Wingate 10-5 and eventually 19-14. Five different members of the Blue and Gold registered a kill in that span. But with the set seemingly in hand, Wingate turned the tide by claiming eight of the next nine points to put ERAU behind 22-20, and the Eagles were unable to recover.

Wingate rode that momentum into the second set, leading 7-2 in the opening stages and then 13-3. Four-consecutive Bulldog errors attempted to bring the Eagles back into the set at 13-7, but Wingate maintained its distance and won set two 25-17.

Both squads traded blows to start the third set until it was a 6-6 tie. However, another mid-set Bulldog rally put the Blue and Gold behind 12-7, though four of those points allowed were from self-inflicted mistakes. The Eagles closed the gap to three at 21-18, but Wingate finished the match on a 4-0 run to claim the sweep.

The Eagles struggled to get anything going offensively, hitting .068 as a team compared to the Bulldogs' .235. Rujano led the team in kills for the first time this season with nine. Datil continued to rack up assists, earning 18 in the match for a total of 102 over the two-day event, while Devyn Petrowski (12) and McBride (10) finished with double-digit digs.

Embry-Riddle heads about an hour north for the Flagler Saints Classic in St. Augustine on Sept. 8 and 9. The Eagles begin the event with matches against Missouri Southern St. (11 a.m.) and No. 10 Missouri-St.Louis (3 p.m.) on Friday before meeting Converse (3 p.m.) and Flagler (7 p.m.) on Saturday.
