Women’s Soccer Dominant in 5-1 Win Over Eckerd

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 11th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's soccer team made a statement in its first Sunshine State Conference game of the season, defeating Eckerd 5-1 at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. The Eagles improved to 3-0-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Tritons drop to 3-4 and 0-1 in the SSC.

Grace Foyer led the Eagles with four points on a pair of goals, while Lauryn Mateo and Isabelle Navren each had a goal and an assist to finish with three points apiece.

As a team, the Eagles bested the Tritons 12-5 in shots with a 6-2 advantage in shots on frame and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Eagles' first goal of the game came early on their second shot of the game. Playing down the right side, the Eagles got the ball to Savannah Sheahan who crossed it into the box. Eckerd goalkeeper Cadence Talbert made an attempt to play the ball, but couldn't hold on to it and it fell to Mateo who tapped in the first goal of her collegiate career at the 8:23 mark.

Mateo also had a hand in the Eagles' second goal, which came a scant three minutes later. After receiving a pass from Marie Myhrvold Seim on the right side, Mateo hit a first-touch cross to Foyer, and the junior took full advantage of being unmarked to rifle a shot into the far side netting for her second goal of the season.

The Tritons answered in the 30th minute when Sierra Hudson's cross ended up in the back of the net and the Eagles took a 2-1 edge into the halftime break.

After scoring their first two goals during the run of play, the Eagles netted their third goal of the game on a set piece. Savanna Sheahan forced and Eckerd defender to play the ball over the end line and Foyer headed home Navren's corner kick to make it 3-1 with 35:40 left to play.

Just over a minute later, Sheahan wreaked havoc on the Eckerd defense again and was taken down inside the 18-yard box on her way to the goal. This time Navren got onto the scoresheet herself, converting on the Eagles' first penalty attempt of the season to make it 4-1 in favor of the home team.

An uphill battle for the Tritons became even more difficult in the 65th minute when Eckerd picked up a red card on a foul inside the penalty area. Sheahan converted from the penalty spot to extend the Eagle lead to 5-1.

Despite playing with just 10 players, the Tritons managed to keep the Eagles of the board for the remainder of the contest. The Eagles, who brought 22 players onto the pitch in Saturday's game, also played solid defense, resulting in the 5-1 final score.

The Eagles travel to Winter Park on Wednesday for a non-conference tilt against Rollins. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
