WINTER PARK, Fla. – Two late goals by
Grace Foyer propelled the 10th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Rollins (2-2-3) at Cahall-Sandspur Stadium on Wednesday. The non-conference match-up between two conference rivals survived a two-hour, 30-minute weather delay and saw Foyer score twice in the last 3:30 to help the Eagles improve to 4-0-2 overall.
In the 19th minute, the Eagles won a free throw deep in the Tars' half of the field. A cross into the box fell to a Tar defender, but her attempt to clear the ball went only as far as
Lauryn Mateo just outside the penalty area. The freshman took a touch before punishing the Rollins miscue with a shot into the lower right corner to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Later in the first half, Kayla Park equalized for Rollins, scoring in the 35th minute. The Eagles held a slight 3-2 edge in shots, but their only attempt on frame resulted in the goal, and at the half, the score remained tied at 1-1.
The possession was even to start the second period, but it was Rollins who made the most of their scoring chances as Park's second goal of the night put the Tars ahead 2-1 at the 62:30 mark.
The Tars continued to test the ERAU defense and appeared on their way to a win, but the Eagles withstood the challenge and slowly turned the tide, moving further into the Rollins defensive third.
With 3:26 left on the clock, the Eagles won their third corner kick of the night.
Isabelle Navren's free kick went over all the players in the box and fell to Foyer's feet at the far post. Amidst the crowd of players, an unmarked Foyer slipped the ball past Tars goalkeeper Lauren Mehos to draw the Eagles level.
The visitors were not done, however. Less than two minutes later, the Tars were whistled for a hand ball just outside the penalty area. Foyer stepped up to take the set piece and buried the ball in the upper 90 to put the Eagles ahead.
On the kick-off following Foyer's second goal, the Tars had a chance of their own, but Lexie Cooper's attempt dribbled wide of the mark, and the Eagles maintained possession in the closing moments to secure the win.
The Eagles return to Sunshine State Conference play at 7 p.m. on Saturday with a trip to Miami Shores to face Barry.
