MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's soccer team notched its second Sunshine State Conference win of the season with a 2-1 defeat of Barry on the road on Saturday. The Eagles scored a goal in each half of play to improve to 5-0-2 overall and 2-0 in the SSC. Barry drops to 2-1-1 and 1-1 in league play.
The Eagles dominated possession from the first whistle keeping the Buccaneers pinned in their half of the field.
After firing two shots that just missed the mark, the Eagles got on the board in the 17th minute. The Buccaneers were called for a foul about 15 yards inside their half of the field. Following a stoppage in play due to an injury,
Olivia Gallo stepped up to take the free kick and lofted the ball into the box where
Lauryn Mateo rose to meet it and headed home her third goal of the season to put the Eagles up 1-0.
The Eagles owned a 4-1 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes but only had one goal to show for their efforts at the halftime break.
Embry-Riddle had a chance to double the lead in the 54th minute when Mateo slotted a ball through to
Marie Myhrvold Seim, putting the ERAU senior in a one-v-one with the goalkeeper Emily Parrott. But Parrott was able to come off her line to stop Myhrvold Seim's advance, and a Barry defender slid in just in time to thwart a
Savanna Sheahan put back to keep the score at 1-0.
With the clock showing 64:46, the Buccaneers got a goal back against the run of play, but their celebration was short-lived as the Eagles answered immediately. On the kick-off following the Barry goal,
Isabelle Navren took the ball deep into the right corner. She lifted what was meant to be a cross into the box, but the ball sailed over everyone and into the far side netting to reclaim the one-goal lead for the Blue and Gold at the 64:58 mark. The 12-second difference between goals ranks as the fifth-fastest answering goal in NCAA II history.
Later in the half, the Eagles put the ball in the back of the net again, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul being called and the remainder of their seven second-half shot attempts were off target resulting in the 2-1 final score.
The Eagles are back at the ERAU Soccer Stadium on Wednesday to host Rollins in another SSC battle. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
