Volleyball Dominant in Sweep of Sailfish

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - It was a dominating performance by the Embry-Riddle volleyball team on Friday as the Eagles swept Palm Beach Atlantic in Rubin Arena. Not only did the Eagles (9-2, 3-0 Sunshine State Conference) outhit the Sailfish (5-6, 1-3 SSC) .231 to .061, they also doubled PBA up in blocks 12-6, which was a three-set season high for the team.

The win gives Embry-Riddle its sixth win over the Sailfish in the last seven meetings.

Embry-Riddle came ready to play from the start, launching ahead 7-2 thanks to a 6-0 run. Dana Gibbons led the charge in the first set, registering four of the Eagles' first six kills. PBA closed the gap down to one at 16-15 with a 3-0 spurt, but the Blue and Gold mimicked that run to go back ahead 19-15 and force a Sailfish timeout.

The break in the action worked in the home team's favor as PBA scored four straight points to tie the set at 19. However, Hunter Ackermann completely took control at the end of the set, registering four kills over the last seven points to give ERAU a 25-20 set win.

Set two proved to be tightly contested up until the midway point. Neither squad earned more than two points of separation until the set was tied at 11 all. The Eagles scored four unanswered points mostly due to three Sailfish attacking errors to claim its largest lead of the set at 15-11. Embry-Riddle managed to keep its distance to secure the second set 25-22, picking up seven total blocks.

Set three was slightly controlled by PBA as the Sailfish maintained an advantage almost the entire way up to a 16-13 score. Thankfully, Embry-Riddle rattled off eight straight points, five of which were from PBA attacking errors, to turn the set upside down and lead 21-16. Ackerman picked up the Blue and Gold's last three points with well-placed kills, and the Eagles remained undefeated in SSC play with the sweep.

Ackerman picked up another double-double, her third of the season, with a team-high 13 kills and 11 digs. Haley Manjack once again showed her blocking prowess with a season-high nine rejections to pace the squad in that category. Tamzen Wilson recorded the most digs (18) and Grace Datil was the top setter with 20 assists.

The Eagles immediately return to action on Saturday when they face Nova Southeastern at 4 p.m.
