Volleyball’s Win Streak Snapped at Five With Loss to Sharks

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - After starting Sunshine State Conference play 3-0, the Embry-Riddle volleyball team suffered its first league setback of the season as Nova Southeastern swept the Eagles on Saturday afternoon in Rick Case Arena. Embry-Riddle (9-3, 3-1 SSC) was riding a five-match winning streak and was one of three teams yet to be defeated in SSC action. However, the Eagles are still high in the standings, currently in a four-way tie for second.

Set one was even to start with the score tied at 6-6, but the Sharks (7-3, 3-1 SSC) proceeded to go on a 9-1 run to put the Eagles well behind 15-7. ERAU continued to fall back as the set continued, falling 25-13. It was a rocky set offensively for the Eagles as they hit -.053 as a team.

The Blue and Gold got off to a blazing start in set two, going up 4-1. However, NSU slowly crawled back to tie it at 10 points each, and from there the set went back and forth. With the Eagles down 18-16, Embry-Riddle grabbed five of the next six points to retake the lead 21-19. The Sharks then used three Eagle errors to claim six of the last seven points to put Embry-Riddle behind two sets to none with a 25-22 second set win.

In the third set, the Eagles fell behind early 5-0. Thankfully, ERAU clawed its way back in with a 7-1 run to tie the set at 9-9. A well-placed serve by Isabella Rujano gave the Eagles their first lead of the set at 14-13 to cap off a 3-0 spurt. Though that lead was short lived, the Blue and Gold stayed close to the Sharks until the score was even at 20 all. From there, NSU captured five of the next six points to end the Eagles' five-match win streak with a third set win of 25-21.

Jaden McBride picked up her eighth double-double of the season with a team-high 12 kills and 13 digs. Haley Manjack contributed four blocks, and Devyn Petrowski added 15 assists.

The Eagles are back home next week for its last two home matches before nearly a month-long road trip. ERAU hosts Saint Leo on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. for a Block Party.
