Volleyball Rallies to Down Saint Leo in Four

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After dropping the first set, the Embry-Riddle volleyball team surged back to claim the next three sets to defeat Saint Leo 3-1 on Thursday night at the ICI Center.

The Eagles outhit the Lions .310 to .162, highlighted by a hit percentage of .469 in the second set. The win was ERAU's fifth straight against SLU and improved the Eagles' all-time record versus the Lions to 9-6 with a 6-2 mark at home.

Saint Leo (8-4, 3-3 Sunshine State Conference) claimed the first two points in the opening set, but the Blue and Gold scored five unanswered points from a pair of Haley Manjack kills and three Lion attacking errors to rally ahead 5-2. That lead grew to five points at 13-8, but Saint Leo claimed the next five points to even the score. The Lions rode the momentum the rest of the way, and the Eagles fell behind one set to none after losing the set 25-20.

Embry-Riddle (10-3, 4-1 SSC) started strong once again in the second set, going up 5-1. The Eagles repeated the process with another 5-1 run to launch ahead 10-2, with four points coming from kills by Jaden McBride. With the score 15-8, ERAU continued to pour it on, using a trio of kills from both Hunter Ackermann and Isabella Rujano to lead 21-8 and eventually win the set 25-13.

Four unanswered points by the Eagles opened the third set. ERAU also scored three of the next four to lead 7-1, but the Lions inched back to cut the Blue and Gold's lead to three at 9-6. However, a 7-0 spurt ballooned the Eagles' lead to 16-6. With the set seemingly in hand at 21-9, Saint Leo fought back to take six of the next seven points to shrink the ERAU advantage to 22-15, but the Eagles held on to win 25-16.

The fourth set was the closest of the match as the two squads traded blows for the first half of the set until the Lions led 12-11. From there, two McBride kills powered a 6-0 run to push the Eagles ahead 17-12, and ERAU never looked back, winning the set 25-21 and the match.

McBride paced the team with 20 kills, 11 digs, and five blocks for her ninth double double of the year. Isabella Rujano added 11 kills, Tamzen Wilson led the squad in digs with 17, and Grace Datil was the leading setter with 29 assists.

The Eagles have one more home match on Saturday at 4 p.m. against RV Eckerd before heading on nearly a month-long road trip.
