Efficient Offense the Key in Volleyball’s Sweep of Tritons

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Despite facing the Sunshine State Conference's strongest defense, the Embry-Riddle volleyball team dismantled RV Eckerd 3-0 Saturday afternoon in the ICI Center. The Tritons (10-3, 3-3 SSC) entered the match with the lowest opponent hit percentage in the league at .101 and were second in blocks per set at just over three-and-a-half. In spite of this, the Eagles (11-3, 5-1 SSC) had no trouble finding success when attacking, finishing the match with a .385 hit percentage, the highest in a single match since Oct. 23, 2021 against Shorter.

It was anticipated to be a fierce battle at the net as the two squads were responsible for the top two blockers in the conference in Eckerd's Kalli Schoening (1.34 blocks per set) and Embry-Riddle's Haley Manjack (1.29 blocks per set).

The Eagles began the match by claiming the opening three points and grew the lead up to five at 12-7 thanks to a team hitting percentage that was sitting at .556 at the time Eckerd called its first timeout. That advantage continued to increase thanks to an 8-2 run that put the score at 20-10. Though the Tritons reduced the Blue and Gold's lead slightly, ERAU went on to claim set one 25-17 with a staggering .433 hit percentage.

Set two was more evenly matched as neither team earned more than three points of separation at any point. Eckerd prepared to even the contest at one set each with a 24-22 score, but an Eagle timeout allowed the home team to regroup, and it was exactly what ERAU needed. A Triton serving and attacking error evened the score at 24 all when Hunter Ackermann and Manjack stepped up to block a pair of Eckerd spikes to steal set two 26-24.

Embry-Riddle held an early lead in set three 5-2 when the Tritons rattled off three straight points to tie it at 5-5. Fast forward to a 9-7 Eagle lead, and Eckerd claimed five of the next six to put ERAU behind 12-10. The deficit was short-lived, however, as the Blue and Gold scored four consecutive points, three of which came from Ackermann kills, and nine of the next 11 to launch ahead 19-14. Embry-Riddle used a pair of three-point spurts to seal the sweep 25-17. As if set one's hit percentage wasn't impressive enough, the Eagles attacked at a .500 clip in set three.

Isabella Rujano set a career high in kills (15) with a .583 hit percentage to lead the squad in that category with Jaden McBride close behind with 14 kills and eight digs. Tamzen Wilson and Gabriela Pagan recorded double-digit digs with 14 and 11, respectively. Grace Datil added 26 assists, and Manjack tacked on five blocks.

The Eagles begin an almost month-long road trip with a match at RV Barry next Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
