DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Ninety minutes was not enough time to separate the Embry-Riddle and Tampa women's soccer teams as the Eagles (7-3-2, 3-1-2) and the Spartans (4-1-4, 0-1-3) played to a 1-1 tie, Saturday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
The start of the game saw the teams hold possession in five-minute shifts. The Eagles controlled the possession in the first five minutes, but the next five belonged to the Spartans who recorded two shots during that brief stretch.
At the 31:19 mark, the Eagles won their fifth corner and was the case on two previous attempts,
Hattie Kettle was the first to a
Berglind Thrastardottir corner kick. Kettle's header made its way to
Wilma Bergman and Bergman, fresh off the Eagle bench and with her back to goal, played the ball over her head and the head of a Tampa defender into the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Tampa, who had a 9-5 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes, tried to answer with a long range shot just over a minute later, but ERAU netminder
Oona Jokinen, who had three first-half saves, was aided by the cross bar, preserving the Eagles' one-goal lead heading into the halftime break.
The opening five minutes of the second period saw the Spartans score on a corner kick of their own as Brooke Kittner leveled the score at 1-1 at the 50:53 mark.
The remainder of the match featured end-to-end action as both sides tried to find the go-ahead goal.
Grace Foyer led the charge for the Eagles with four shots in the second half, two of which were saved by Tampa goalie Aidan Smith. The Spartans totaled five shots after their goal, but only two of those troubled Jokinen who finished with five saves.
The Eagles will be on the road for their next SSC contest, traveling to Saint Leo for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday.
