DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Following a two-game road swing, the Embry-Riddle women's soccer team's return to the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium was marked by a loss as the Eagles (8-5-2, 4-3-2) fell to Florida Southern 3-1 on Wednesday.
Both teams were level in shots at six apiece in the first half, but the Lady Mocs (4-5-4, 1-4-3) outshot the Eagles 7-3 in the second half and 8-2 in shots on goal in the game to pick up their first Sunshine State Conference win of the season.
Florida Southern struck first in the ninth minute as a giveaway inside the Eagles' box led to and Ashley Shimberg goal. The Eagles were able to rally, however, and in the 29th minute
Grace Foyer played a ball over the top of the Lady Moc defense to
Lauryn Mateo who chipped the goalkeeper for her seventh goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1.
Five minutes later, Foyer had an opportunity to give the Eagles lead, but her header went just over the cross bar. Conversely, the Lady Mocs were able to capitalize on their next attempt as Shimberg's long-range strike put the Lady Mocs back in front 2-1 at the half.
While the Eagles kept pressure on the Florida Southern defense for much of the second period, they were unable to test FSC goalkeeper Lily O'Neil. The Lady Mocs, on the other hand, forced four saves from ERAU's
Oona Jokinen and with less than three minutes remaining, Shimberg was able to the ball past Jokinen again to seal the victory for the visitors.
The Eagles are back on the pitch on Saturday, hosting Flagler at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
