Volleyball’s Win Streak Snapped in 3-1 Loss to Mocs

LAKELAND, Fla. - Following a dominant upset over No. T-24 Nova Southeastern on Tuesday, the Embry-Riddle volleyball team suffered its first loss in Sunshine State Conference play on Friday. The Eagles lost 3-1 to Florida Southern, ending their five-match winning streak. ERAU knew it would have its hands full at the net as FSC averaged the most blocks per set (2.91) in the SSC. The two teams struggled on offense as Embry-Riddle hit a season-low .109 while Florida Southern finished with a clip of .152.

It was a rough start for the Blue and Gold to set one. After securing the first point, the next three went to the visitors due to Eagle errors. Embry-Riddle stayed close to Florida Southern, but the Mocs then scored five straight to open up the set 11-5. Then, a pair of FSC miscues along with an ace from Ashley Lunt helped ERAU claim three consecutive tallies to make the score 12-9.

The Mocs used three kills and an ace to increase the gap to seven points (17-10). At 21-13, the Eagles attempted a late-set comeback, fueled by two kills from Isabella Rujano. Five unanswered points made the set 21-18. Soon after, ERAU fended off four-straight set points with two kills and two blocks to get within one at 24-23, but FSC captured the next point and the set.

Embry-Riddle had the upper hand early in set two, leading 6-4, when four-straight attacking errors by the Blue and Gold sent the home team ahead 9-7. However, FSC misfired on two of its spikes to tie the scoreboard 9-9, and the set remained closely contested until the latter stages. Even at 20-20, the next four points went to the Mocs, and although the Eagles were once again able to fend off multiple set points thanks to back-to-back kills by Jaden McBride, the home team went ahead two sets to none with a 25-22 set win. The first two sets were a defensive battle as neither team managed to record a hit percentage above .125 in either set.

Embry-Riddle fared much better offensively in the third, hitting .250. Rujano produced three quick kills to aid the Eagles to a 6-4 lead. That advantage continued to stretch until the score was 18-12. However, Florida Southern responded by taking five of the following six points to get within two at 19-17. A couple of rallies later, the score stood at 21-18 when the Mocs snatched the lead from the Eagles with four consecutive points. Following a timeout, ERAU regrouped to claim the set 25-22 on the back of two aces in a row by Lexie Hage to take the last four points.

Embry-Riddle walked out to an 8-4 lead in set four, but FSC went on a 10-2 spurt to send the Eagles behind 14-10. ERAU was unable to recover despite McBride's effort to mount a comeback by earning three of the team's last four points. Florida Southern won the set 25-19 and the match.

McBride (14 kills, 11 digs) and Rujano (13 kills, 20 digs) both earned double-doubles. Dana Gibbons contributed seven kills and a team-high six blocks. Ashlyn Koerner added 20 assists and six digs while Hage notched 17 assists, seven digs and a career-best five aces. Gabriela Pagan accumulated 18 digs.

The Eagles have a tall task in front of them on Saturday as they face No. 1 Tampa on the road. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
