Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. - Embry-Riddle volleyball was unable to overcome top-ranked Tampa on Saturday, falling to the Spartans in straight sets. The Spartans entered the match allowing the fewest opponent aces (0.87) and blocks (1.48) per set, two areas where the Eagles usually excel. However, the Blue and Gold were held to a season-low in both categories with three aces and two blocks.

Tampa also ranked high in the NCAA II in kills (2nd, 15.2) and assists (6th, 13.9) per set, which was on full display in the first set as the Spartans recorded a .524 hit percentage with no attacking errors. Rujano did her best to keep the Eagles close in set one. She recorded three of the team's first five points and seven of the first 12. Embry-Riddle did hold a 4-3 lead and later a 5-5 tie, but the Spartans rattled off four straight points and held the lead from there on out. Part of the challenge was Tampa's incredibly efficient offense.

In set two, it was Ruby Owen who tried to get the Eagles going by capturing two of the team's opening three points. ERAU tied the score on three separate occasions, using a 4-0 streak out of a timeout to level the set at 14-14. However, the Eagles fell behind by as many as five points as Tampa looked like it was going to cruise to another set win with the score 23-18. ERAU had other ideas when the Blue and Gold tallied three kills in a row to get within two, but the Spartans took the last two rallies (25-21).

Both sides produced four-point runs early on in set three to then tie the score at 8-8. From there, neither team could gain separation as the score was tied on another six occasions over the next 12 points. From there, the Eagles slowly fell behind until the scoreboard read 22-17 in favor of the home team. Though two kills and a pair of Spartan attacking errors got the Eagles within two (23-21), Tampa took the last two points to win the match-clinching set.

Rujano was the only Eagle to reach double digits in kills (14). The junior also added seven digs and a team-high two blocks. McBride finished with seven kills and 12 digs. Ashlyn Koerner added 17 assists and nine digs while Lexie Hage contributed 16 assists. Gabriela Pagan led the squad in digs with 14.

The Eagles return home next week hoping to get back on track. Action resumes on Friday, Oct. 11 as ERAU supports Dig Pink against RV Eckerd.
