DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team posted a dominant performance enroute to their first Sunshine State Conference win of the season on Saturday. The Eagles (5-3-1, 1-1-1) netted a goal in each half to top Barry (5-3, 2-2) 2-0 at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
The Lady Bucs had the first corner kick and the first shot of the game, but from that point, the Eagles put Barry under pressure, making it difficult for the visitors to play out of their own end.
After her first shot of the game sailed just high of the bar,
Lauryn Mateo made good on her second attempt. The sophomore created space for herself on the right side of the box and after collecting pass for
Ida Zetterberg, Mateo lifted a shot over the head of the Barry goalkeeper to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the eight-minute-mark.
The Eagles outshot Barry 10-4 in the first 45 minutes, but at the intermission, Mateo's score was the only difference in the contest.
Possession was the name of the game to start the second half as the teams combined for just three shots in the first 23 minutes. Barry had three corner kicks in that span, but neither the corners nor the shots troubled
Oona Jokinen in the ERAU goal.
Following a Barry goal kick in the 69th minute,
Berglind Thrastardottir won the ball in the midfield and carried it about 45 yards before tapping a pass to Zetterberg on the left side of the pitch. Thrastardottir continued her run into the box and Zetterberg rewarded the effort, getting the ball back to the Eagle sophomore who slotted home her second goal of the season to double the Eagle lead to 2-0.
The remainder of the half was played between the 18-yard boxes and with neither team able to find the back of the net, the game ended in a 2-0 win for Embry-Riddle.
The Eagles will step away from conference play on Wednesday when they host Flagler in a game slated for 7 p.m.
