Volleyball Sweeps Tritons

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After downing Eckerd in four sets in St. Petersburg on Saturday, the Embry-Riddle volleyball team continued the trend by defeating the Tritons once again on Tuesday night, this time at home in straight sets. The Eagles continued their fantastic play within the ICI Center, improving to 10-1 on their home court this season. ERAU moves to 17-10 all-time against Eckerd and 11-2 at home. It was the program's fifth-straight win over EC.

Embry-Riddle started out strong by controlling the first four points of set one with a Tritons service error and three kills, two of which came from Isabella Rujano. The lead stretched out to 9-2 thanks to a five-point spurt with a pair of kills from Kailey Hrbek. However, Eckerd responded with a 5-0 streak of its own to get within two at 9-7. Jaden McBride then sent the Blue and Gold on another 4-0 run with two kills to increase the team's cushion to six points (13-7). Soon after, the Tritons once again strung together five unanswered tallies to decrease the home team's lead to just a point.

With ERAU up 23-20, Eckerd grabbed the lead with four consecutive points largely due to back-to-back-to-back aces. From there, the Eagles fought off two set points from EC and closed the set out with two kills from McBride and a set-clinching ace from Ashley Lunt to win 27-25.

The tide turned at the start of the second set as Eckerd claimed five of the first six points. Three kills by Rujano closed the gap and evened the score at 6-6, but then the Tritons accumulated three straight points to retake the lead 9-6. The deficit remained for Embry-Riddle until a couple of three-point spurts sent the Blue and Gold ahead 18-16. Though Eckerd tied the score at 19-19, ERAU once again used two 3-0 streaks to grab set two 25-21 with a pair of Eckerd attacking errors to close the set out.

Set three went back and forth at the start with neither squad able to gain more than two points of separation. At the midway point, the score was knotted at 15-15 when McBride and Haley Manjack each registered two kills to claim five straight points for the home side, causing a 20-15 advantage that held up until the end as ERAU won set three 25-20 for the 11th sweep of the season.

McBride (20 kills, 7 digs) edged Rujano (19 kills, 7 digs) for the team lead in kills. Ashlyn Koerner tallied an impressive 37 assists in just three sets with 17 digs. Gabriela Pagan posted a team-high 16 digs while Ashley Lunt set a career-high in digs with 12. Hrbek found herself inserted into the starting lineup for the first time this season after an injury sidelined Dana Gibbons, and the sophomore made the most of the opportunity by registering a season-high five kills and three blocks, which led the team.

As a team, Embry-Riddle earned 68 digs, the most in a three-set match this season.

Embry-Riddle will celebrate its three seniors with Senior Night on Friday at 7 p.m. against Palm Beach Atlantic.
