DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Lisa Wilson celebrated a milestone in her coaching career on Saturday. In a battle of undefeated teams, Embry-Riddle Women's downed Barry 76-54 to give Wilson the 200th victory of her career as a head coach. The win also helped the Eagles stay perfect at 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.
The game was close through the first four minutes with Embry-Riddle holding a slight 9-6 advantage at the 6:12 mark. Following a couple of empty possessions by both sides,
Anye' Staton ended a 90-second scoring lull with her first layup of the game and that basket was the start of a 16-6 scoring run that gave the Blue and Gold a 25-12 cushion at the end of the first.
The Eagles picked up where they left off to start the second quarter extending the lead to 22 points (39-17). The Blue and Gold endured a scoreless drought in the last 2:27 and that allowed the Lady Bucs to trim the lead to 15 (39-24) at the half.
Barry carried its second-quarter form into the third as they rattled off eight unanswered to cut the lead to seven. Wilson called a timeout at the 7:23 mark and the Eagle players responded putting together 10-0 run of their own reclaim a 17-point advantage. Another spurt allowed Barry to make it a 10-point game, but successful trips to the free throw line by
Madyson Jean-Louis and
Kailey Turpening helped the Eagles widen the gap to 14 (59-45) with 10 minutes left to play.
The final period saw the Eagles limit the Lady Bucs to just three made field goals. The Eagles were 6-for-16 from the field and 3-for-5 from the three-point line, while Barry was just 3-for-17 from the field 0-for-6 from long range. That discrepancy helped the Eagles enjoy their largest lead of the game (73-50) and Turpening adding the exclamation point with a three with 48 seconds left to seal the win.
Jean-Louis registered her third 20-point game of the season, finishing with a game-high 21 points to go with three steals and four rebounds. Turpening totaled 15 points, four boards and three assists, while Staton contributed nine points six rebounds, two blocks and two assists to the victory.
Audrey Jennings was the leading scorer for Barry with 10 points as the Lady Bucs move to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.
The Eagles will play their next game the day after Thanksgiving when they welcome Northwood (Mich.) to the ICI Center for a 2 p.m. tip.
