DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Kailey Turpening had one of the best performances of her career coming out of the Thanksgiving break. The junior finished just one rebound short of a triple-double, tallying 15 points, 13 assists and nine boards to lead the Embry-Riddle women's basketball team to an 84-71 win over Northwood (Mich.) on Friday at the ICI Center. The Eagles remain unbeaten at 7-0, while the Timberwolves fall to 1-4 with the loss.
Turpening's assist and rebound totals were both career bests and her 13 assists bettered the ERAU single-game record she set last season as Friday marked the first double-double of her career.
Laurie Satchell and Anye' Staton also posted double-doubles in the victory. Satchell had 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, while Staton totaled 11 points and a game and career-best 12 boards in 13 minutes off the bench.
The Eagles got off to a slow start in Friday's game, going nearly five minutes before recording their first points of the contest. Northwood scored a three-pointer just six seconds after winning the tip, but they too were unable to generate any offense over the next 4:45 allowing
Sarah Napoli's first trey of the day to tie the score at the 5:09 mark. Most of the scoring came in the last 3:16 of the frame as the Eagles used a 9-4 run to take a 15-10 lead into the second quarter.
The second period saw the Eagles maintain the five-point advantage through much of the quarter, but the Timberwolves, who outscored the Eagles 26-10 in the second 10 minutes of play, closed out the half on a 16-9 run to overtake ERAU 36-34 at the half.
The Timberwolves took a five-point lead of their own to start the third, but that didn't last long as the Eagles shot 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the field to recapture the lead for good. The Eagles widened the gap to 13 points (57-44), but a 7-2 run by the Timberwolves made it an eight-point (59-51) game with 10 minutes remaining.
Both Turpening and Staton hit their double-doubles at the same time in the fourth quarter as Turpening fed Staton for a layup to make the score 63-55. The Timberwolves kept the game close, but a jumper by
Alyssa Brasko, a three by
Kyra Haan and back-to-back free throws from Turpening helped the Eagles to their largest lead of the game (80-65).
Stephanie Ramsey's first points of the season all came from the free throw line where she was four-for-four in the last 31 seconds to seal the Eagle win.
The Eagles return to Sunshine State Conference play on Wednesday when they host Florida Tech at the ICI Center. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
