MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team opened its 10th season of competition on the road on Friday afternoon, recording the program's ninth season-opening win with a 92-78 defeat of Auburn Montgomery in the first game of the 2024 GSC/SSC Crossover Classic.
Kyra Haan had a career day for the Blue and Gold, tallying a career-high 22 points to go with four assists and a game-high five steals.
Madyson Jean-Louis matched Haan's scoring output with 22 points of her own, while
Mary Lengemann was the Eagles' third double-digit scorer with 11 points. Both Jean-Louis and Lengemann totaled seven rebounds, while
Kailey Turpening led all players with six assists.
Friday's win saw the Eagles overcome a slow start as the Warhawks opened the game on a 10-2 run. Haan, who was 7-for-10 from long range, ended the AUM run with her first three of the day and that basket triggered an 11-0 run that gave the Eagles their first lead of the contest, 13-10. The Eagles never looked back and despite coming up empty on five of their first six possessions, the Eagles shot 66.67 percent from the field in the first quarter to take a 25-16 lead.
While the Eagles' shooting cooled in the second quarter, they were still able to best the Warhawks in the scoring column 16-8 and at the half, the lead had swelled to 41-25.
A high-scoring third quarter saw the Eagles drop 29 points on the Warhawks thanks in part to five three-pointers, four of which were scored by Haan. At the end of 30 minutes, Embry-Riddle held a commanding 70-47 lead.
The home team came storming back in the fourth quarter. The Eagles scored the first bucket of the period to make it a 25-point game, but the Warhawks outscored the Eagles 12-0 over the next two minutes to cut the lead to 13 (72-59). A series of Eagle free throws halted the AUM run briefly, but the Warhawks continued to battle and with 3:47 left to play, the Eagle lead had been trimmed to 11 (79-68).
The next possession saw Jean-Louis knock down one of her two threes on the day and the teams traded baskets down the stretch, resulting in the 14-point win for Embry-Riddle.
The Eagles close out tournament play on Saturday, facing Montevallo at 11 a.m. (CST).
