Volleyball Downs Tritons 3-1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Eckerd proved to be a tough test, but the Embry-Riddle volleyball team was resilient in a 3-1 win over the Tritons. Despite trailing in kills (51-46), hit percentage (.207-.176), digs (67-60), assists (48-43) and blocks (10-9), the Eagles hung on to win their third match in a row and their fourth straight against Eckerd. ERAU leads the all-time series 16-10.

The Tritons started set one on a 4-0 run, and Embry-Riddle's deficit eventually grew to as large as six points at 10-4. Isabella Rujano was a bright spot early on for the Blue and Gold, capturing four of the team's first seven points with kills. Down six, the Eagles claimed five of the following six rallies to get within two at 11-9. Embry-Riddle eventually leveled the score at 15-15 with back-to-back aces from Ashley Lunt. Later on, kills from Dana Gibbons, Jaden McBride, and Rujano propelled ERAU out front 18-17. Embry-Riddle concluded the set on a 4-1 run to complete the comeback and win 25-23.

Eckerd got off to another hot start in set two, leading 9-1 from seven kills and two blocks to force the Eagles to use an early timeout. As the set progressed, the deficit continued to grow as the Tritons took the set 25-12.

Again, Eckerd took the first two points in set three, but ERAU then rattled off nine-straight points partially thanks to a trio of blocks from Rujano and Haley Manjack. It was a dominating 25-12 set win that saw Embry-Riddle record six blocks despite entering the set with one over the first two sets.

This time it was the Eagles who got off to a strong start in set four with a 4-0 advantage. That lead held up until Eckerd also tallied four straight points to tie the set at 8-8. Another four-point run with three kills and an ace by the Tritons sent ERAU into a 14-11 hole. With the score at 17-14 in favor of the home team, the Eagles accumulated eight unanswered points to take control of the set at 22-17. Rujano registered four straight kills during that stretch. Embry-Riddle never looked back and won 25-20 to take the match.

Rujano produced 22 kills, nine digs and five blocks while McBride ended the match with 11 kills and six digs. Ashlyn Koerner was the top setter with 38 assists with 11 digs. Gabriela Pagan matched her season high in digs with 23, which tied for the fourth-most by a Sunshine State Conference student-athlete in a match this season. Manjack grabbed a team-best six blocks.

The Eagles and Tritons will meet again, this time in Daytona Beach on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
