Pitching Guides Softball to Doubleheader Sweep, Series Win at Barry

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The pitchers were the star of the show for Embry-Riddle softball as the Eagles took both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Barry by scores of 5-1 and 3-0 to win the series. In total, ERAU (6-5, 2-1 Sunshine State Conference) held the Buccaneers (8-7, 1-2 SSC) to one run and seven hits combined over the two contests. In game one, the Eagles allowed a season-low three hits and then shut out Barry in game two for the team's second shutout victory of the season.

It was the second-straight series Embry-Riddle claimed over the Buccaneers, and the program improved to 14-10 in the all-time series having won three of the last four and five of the last seven.

GAME 1: Embry-Riddle - 5, Barry - 1

The Eagles had their work cut out for them in game one, facing the SSC leader in strikeouts in Maci Barnhart, but ERAU got to Barry's pitcher early. After Emma Wood singled up the middle with one out, Delaney Morgan became just the third player in the SSC to reach three triples this season, joining her teammate Karina Ortiz-Munoz, with her three-bagger to right scoring Wood for an early 1-0 lead.

However, Barry responded in the bottom half of the inning with a single and double combo to tie the score. ERAU was quick to regain its lead in the following frame when Shelby Morse picked up her first career extra-base hit on a double down the left field line to easily score Raissa Bianco.

In the circle, Morse was just as impactful. From the second inning onward, she and the Eagle defense prevented Barry from registering a hit for the rest of the game, and she struck out a pair of Buccaneers.

Offensively, the Blue and Gold constantly threatened by putting a batter on base in every inning. Fortunately, ERAU was able to add some insurance runs in the top of the seventh on four consecutive hits. Back-to-back base knocks by Morgan and Ortiz-Munoz had two on with two outs when Addison Orr smashed her first career triple down the right field line to double the Eagles' score. A single from Bianco brought in Orr for her first RBI of the season.

Morse (W, 2-2) and Wood (S, 1) were two-way threats. Morse lasted five innings and allowed just one run on two hits with three strikeouts while going 2-for-2 at the dish. Wood took over in relief in the sixth and held Barry to just one hit with a strikeout to pair with a 3-for-4 effort, her second three-hit game of the season, and a run.

Morgan finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Katriana Bain recorded her first multi-hit performance in 2024 by going 2-for-4. With the triples from Morgan and Orr, it was just the 11th time in program history the Eagles recorded multiple triples in a game and the second time this season. Additionally, it moved Morgan into a tie for seventh on the program's all-time list with four.

GAME 2: Embry-Riddle - 3, Barry - 0

Once again, the Eagles attempted to set the tone early, putting two runners on with singles from Leah Oberkehr, her first of the season, and Ortiz-Munoz. But the two members of the Blue and Gold were left stranded as the game remained in a stalemate for the first three innings.

The fourth inning began with a bang when Morgan sent a ball into orbit over right field for her first home run of the year. ERAU built onto that with an Ortiz-Munoz double to right and a single up the middle by Latoria to make it 2-0 visitors. After her stout performance in game one, Orr earned her first career start in game two, and she continued to make an impact by using a sac fly to left to push Mallory Kinahan home for a 3-0 lead.

Barry played with urgency in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff double started the frame, and the runner then advanced to third with one out. A pop fly to left gave the appearance of a sacrifice fly, but Orr caught the ball and used her cannon to one-hop the throw to Isabelle Bonn at home, who applied the tag.

Kinahan (W, 2-1) continued to keep Barry's offense in check, striking out a pair of batters in the fifth inning and retiring the side in the sixth. She finished her longest outing of the season (6.1 innings) having allowed only three hits and two walks with a season-high four strikeouts to earn her 25th career win, the seventh most all-time. Ava Domenici came in to record the last two outs in the circle.

Ortiz-Munoz notched her first multi-hit game of the season (2-for-3) with a run, and Bianco stretched her hitting streak to five games after going 1-for-2.

Bonn's five putouts in the game gave her 350 for a career, passing Robi Zimmerman for the sixth-most all-time by an Eagle.

The Eagles return home for a meeting with Rollins next weekend. Game one of the series is slated for Friday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m.
