DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Thanks to a double hat trick from senior
Coleman Jacobs, the Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse team came away with its first win of the season, 14-9, over RV North Greenville (3-2) on Saturday. The win marks Head Coach
John Jez's first for the Eagles.
Â
Aside from Jacobs, the Eagles (1-2) used three goals and an assist from
Pete Abbes, two scores from
Christian Hofer, and a goal apiece from
Isaiah Hines,
Joe Anderson,
Marcus Needham and
Hudson Kirk. Hines also added three assists for his second-straight multi-assist game. Getting the second straight start in net was keeper
Reid Kerr who staved off a tough NGU attack, collecting 13 saves in all four quarters.
Â
Unsurprisingly, Jacobs got the Eagles rolling early with a man-up goal, assisted by Hines, to make it 1-0. But the Crusaders notched two in a row. After much of the lengthy first period rolled away with no action, Tyler Pellegrino tied it up at 1-1, then just under two minutes into the second, Hayden Moffat put NGU up 2-1.Â
Â
But a couple minutes later, Abbes collected his first of the day to even the ledger, then tallied his second at the 8:43 mark to give ERAU the lead; one which they would never relinquish, though the game would be tied at 3-3, 4-4, and 5-5 down the stretch.
Â
After Alex Brooks evened things at 3-3, Needham found the back of the net to go up 4-3. With 1:24 in the second, Hines regained the Eagle lead with a great shot just before halftime.Â
Â
Once again, the Crusaders connected on the first goal of the period to start the second half, making it 5-5, but Anderson rallied the Blue & Gold with a goal at the 11:21 mark. From there, Jacobs added two goals within 50 seconds to quickly extend the Eagle lead to 8-5.
Â
The defense stood out today, stopping shots and forcing bad take to hold the Crusaders at bay. Abbes then made it 9-5 from a
Parker Liposky pass, his first assist of the year. North Greenville added two quick goals, within a minute of each other in the fourth, but Kirk scored with 8:23 left to make it 10-7. Jacobs then entered fury mode once again, netting two quick scores within a minute to make it 12-7 in favor of the home Eagles. Hofer added an insurance score at the 3:05 mark, and Jacobs scored one more to complete the double hattrick and secure the win.
Â
After their first victory over the season, the Eagles return home to face another tough test in No. 20 Montevallo on Feb. 29 at 6 p.m..
