Another Day, Another Walk-Off: Softball Handles Cavaliers 2-1, 6-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the fourth time in the last 12 games, the Embry-Riddle softball team walked it off, beating Virginia-Wise 2-1 and 6-1 on a Tuesday afternoon. It was the team's fifth walk-off win of the season.

Both the pitching staff and defense were dialed in. Over 14 innings of play, the Eagles (18-8) held the Cavaliers (9-15) to a combined two runs and five hits and turned three double plays.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle - 2, UVA Wise - 1

As usual, ERAU had a flair for the dramatic in game one. The Eagle defense came ready to play as Raissa Bianco and Karina Ortiz-Munoz turned a 4-3 double play in the first inning.

In the second, Katriana Bain earned a walk and Leah Oberkehr entered as a pinch runner. She stole second and then scored on a single by Addison Orr that grazed the diving second baseman's glove and trickled into the outfield.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Shelby Morse was plowing down Cavaliers. She prevented the visitors from recording a hit in the first five innings and even forced a ground ball in the fifth that turned into a 5-4-3 twin killing thanks to the efforts of Kelsey Kressler, Bianco and Ortiz-Munoz.

At the start of the seventh, the Blue and Gold needed just three more outs to earn the victory, but UVA Wise didn't go down without a fight. The leadoff batter singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Morse struck out the following batter for the second out. The next Cavalier sent a high fly ball to right, and it appeared to be game over. However, the ball popped in and out of the fielder's glove to allow the runner on second to touch home to tie the game at 1-1.

Embry-Riddle stayed optimistic and battled in the bottom of the inning. Bain drew her second walk of the game to start things off and was replaced by Parker Ray. Ray stole second and then easily scored when Latoria smacked a pitch to right field for the second walk-off hit of her career.

Latoria (1-for-3) and Orr (1-for-2) were responsible for driving in the Eagles' only two runs with an RBI each while Oberkehr and Ray both scored as pinch runners.

Morse (W, 6-3) was fantastic from inside the circle. She matched her single-game season high in strikeouts with four and allowed one unearned run and two hits over seven innings for her fourth win in her last five starts.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle - 6, UVA Wise - 1

The Eagles were thieves in game two, stealing seven bases as a team, which tied for the third most in a single game in program history and was the team's most since 2014.

Once again, Embry-Riddle struck first. Bianco reached on a fielding error by the shortstop in the first and promptly stole second. Sydney Linn then knocked a base hit up the middle to push Bianco home. Linn swiped second and caught the defense by surprise when she rounded third on a ground ball from Morgan and sprinted home for a second Eagle run.

Ortiz-Munoz was the star of the show in the top of the top of the second. The first baseman caught three straight pop-ups to send UVA Wise down in order.

The tag team of Bianco and Linn came through yet again in the bottom of the third. Bianco beat out the throw from the shortstop for a hit, stole second, and scored on another single up the middle by Linn for a 3-0 lead.

ERAU's defense picked up its third double play of the day when Kerry O'Sullivan, Bianco, and Ortiz-Munoz turned a 6-4-3 double play to erase a leadoff single in the fifth.

Another three runs were tacked on in the bottom of the sixth. Oberkehr stole a pair of bases and was sent home on Latoria's single to left. Ray entered the game to run and swiped second. A wild pitch soon after allowed Ray to race 120 feet all the way to the plate. Kressler capped the scoring by the home team with a single through the right side that allowed Orr to score the Eagles' sixth run.

UVA Wise launched a solo shot over the right field fence in the seventh, but that was all they could muster.

Five different members of the Blue and Gold stole a base with Bianco and Oberkehr stealing two each.

Linn had a season-best game, recording her first three-hit contest to stretch her hit streak to six games. The freshman also notched two RBIs and one run. Bianco scored twice and tallied one hit in three at-bats.

Mallory Kinahan (W, 6-2) was dominant once again. She allowed just two hits over five shutout innings. Ava Domenici earned her first career save in a two-inning relief appearance. It brought the Eagles to five total saves on the season, which is a single-season program record despite not even reaching the midway point of the schedule.

It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs, and it improved Embry-Riddle to an 11-0 record against first-time opposition this season.

In terms of career records, Ortiz-Munoz started her 116th and 117th games to move into seventh on the all-time list. Morgan stole her 21st career base, the eighth-most in program history, and Kinahan's 29th career win is tied for the third most by an Eagle.

Sunshine State Conference play resumes with a series at No. 4 Tampa that begins on Friday at 6 p.m.
