Fielding Woes Foil Softball’s Upset Bid in 3-2 Loss to No. 4 Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. - Errors were a major factor in Embry-Riddle softball's 3-2 loss to No. 4 Tampa in the first game of the series on Friday. A pair of wild throws eventually allowed the Spartans (21-4, 5-2 Sunshine State Conference) to score three unearned runs, which turned out to be the difference between victory and defeat for the Eagles (18-9, 3-4 SSC).

An errant throw to first on a sac bunt in the top of the first allowed the first two Spartans to reach base. A single to right then put Tampa ahead 1-0.

Embry-Riddle battled back in the top of the third. Shelby Morse earned a leadoff walk. Then Leah Oberkehr entered as a pinch runner and advanced to third from a sac bunt from Kelsey Kressler and a single by Kerry O'Sullivan. Raissa Bianco came through with a high chopper that bounced over the second baseman's head out to right to score Oberkehr with ease.

With the score tied, another wild throw on a sac bunt once again put the first two batters of the inning on base in the bottom of the third. A fielder's choice to second then broke the tie, and a passed ball soon after had the Spartans ahead 3-1.

O'Sullivan put on a show in the bottom of the fourth, making a diving grab on a line drive to open the frame. She also fielded a ground ball to help the Blue and Gold retire the side in order for the first time in the game.

Lauren Latoria got the fifth inning going with a single down the left line. Parker Ray pinch ran for the designated player, and she caused Tampa's second baseman to mishandle a ground ball from Morse by crossing the batted ball's path on her way to second and blocking the fielder's view. With Ray now on third, Kressler then stepped in and sent a shallow fly ball to right. A pair of Spartans converged on the ball and collided but still made the catch, however, Ray was able to speed home to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Isabelle Bonn entered the game in the bottom of the six and promptly threw out a runner trying to steal second.

Morse (L, 6-4) had a fantastic outing in the circle. She held Tampa to three runs, all of which were unearned, on five hits and one walk with a strikeout.

Bianco, O'Sullivan, and Latoria were the only Eagles to earn a hit in the contest.

In the field, Karina Ortiz-Munoz accumulated seven putouts to set a program record for the most in a career with 751, moving ahead of Katy Thompson.

The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday.
