DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team used solid defense to notch the program's fifth win in a row on Saturday. In a game that pitted Embry-Riddle Head Coach Caitlin Kenahan against her alma mater and former coach, the Eagles shut down Saint Anselm's (3-2) offense on the way to a 16-6 defeat of the 18th-ranked Hawks to improve to 9-1 on the year.
Saturday's game featured an ERAU single-game record 21 caused turnovers.
Caitlin Gavin was just one caused turnover shy of matching the individual game record in that category as she finished with seven caused turnovers on the day.
Kenley Zeruto and
Eliana Enners led the Eagle offense with four goals each with Enners picking up a season-high seven ground balls.
Callison Foreman earned her fourth hat trick of the season while
Allison Cimaglia won a career-high seven draws.
Saint Anselm got on the board first, scoring twice in the first three minutes to go up 2-0. The Eagles outshot the Hawks 10-7 in the first 15 minutes, but SAU goalie Elizabeth Driscoll came up with five saves to keep the Eagles at bay and at the end of the first the visitors led 4-3.
Goals were tough to come by in the second quarter as both teams combined for just five goals. This time, it was the Eagles who had the one-goal advantage in the period and at the half the score was tied at 6-6.
The second half was all Embry-Riddle. The Eagle takeover started with a seven-goal fourth. The Blue and Gold registered 11 shots while the Embry-Riddle defense held the Hawks to just three attempts. Two goals each by Zeruto, Foreman and Enners lifted the Eagles to a 13-6 lead heading into the final frame.
Enners started the fourth with a goal at the 12:38 mark and the stood as the only score for the next seven minutes. Once again, the Hawks' offense was stymied by the Eagle pressure and the home team ended the game with a 30-minute shutout while getting goals from Gavin and Zeruto to take the win.
The Eagles' next game will be at Lee in Cleveland, Tennessee on March 24.
