DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 16th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team won the doubles point and three of six singles matches to top Tiffin (5-3) 4-3, Saturday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The win improves the Eagles' overall record to 4-1 on the year.
 
Doubles play lasted almost an hour with the deciding point going to a tiebreaker. Teaming up for the first time this season, Michele Iftimie and Joshua Nuyts dispatched the Tiffin duo of Michael Gurtner and Matthew Telford 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The Dragons won the next doubles match as Cyrille Colomb and Martin Driesner bested Safar Rasulov and Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo 6-4. The clincher came at the second spot as another first-time pairing in Caelan Potts and Fernando Alonso outlasted Matthew Weaver and Ruben Fonga 7-6 (8-6) to give the Eagles a one-point edge heading into singles.
 
Nuyts was the first off the court in singles with his 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Gurtner at the second position. The next two points went to the Dragons who earned wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.
 
Playing on court six, Diaz Rodrigo put the Eagles back in front with his 6-1, 6-3 win over Weaver, but Coloomb managed to hold off Potts in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) to pull the Dragons level at 3-3.
 
The clinching point came down to a battle on court four between Iftimie and Maxime Navrotchi. Iftimie took the first set 6-2, but Navrotchi came back to win the second by the same score, forcing a third set. The final set need a tiebreaker to determine the outcome, and, in the end, it was Iftimie who was able to pull out the win (7-6) (4)) to lift the Eagles to victory.
 
The Eagles' next match will be at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday when they host No. 15 Wingate at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
