Softball Falls Short in 1-0 Pitchers’ Duel Loss to Saint Leo

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It was a defensive battle at Radiology Associates Field on Friday night as the Embry-Riddle softball team lost the series opener to Saint Leo 1-0. The Eagles (20-12, 3-7 Sunshine State Conference) were limited to just two hits, but they did thwart numerous scoring threats by the Lions (23-10, 10-3 SSC) and forced eight runners to be left on base.

Embry-Riddle flashed the leather early on in the first inning. A one-out single was erased when Kelsey Kressler, Raissa Bianco and Karina Ortiz-Munoz turned a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

The Blue and Gold got in some trouble in the second, though. After the leadoff batter was clipped by a pitch, back-to-back bunts had runners on the corners with one out. The next batter also bunted down the third base line, but Kressler crashed in and was able to rifle a throw back to Kerry O'Sullivan on third to tag the lead runner out.

The stalemate was broken in the top of the third when a fielding error, a walk, and a single brought in the only run of the game.

In the fifth, Bianco turned her second twin killing of the game, though this time all by herself. After two straight singles and a wild pitch started the inning, the second baseman snagged a line drive and stepped on second base for a double play.

Saint Leo pushed a runner to third in the sixth, but Katriana Bain picked off the Lion to conclude the half inning.

Delaney Morgan was the only Eagle who saw consistent success at the plate. She went 1-for-1 with two walks. Emma Wood also registered a hit.

Mallory Kinahan (L, 7-4) came out on the losing end of the pitchers' duel, but the junior still tossed a brilliant game. She allowed just one unearned run and nine hits with a strikeout in her complete game.

Morgan also stole her 24th career base, the sixth most all time.

The series concludes with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
