WINTER PARK, Fla. – Thanks to a dominant third quarter and six goals from
Coleman Jacobs, the RV Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse team nearly upended No. 6 Rollins on Wednesday night, but the Eagles (6-6, 2-3 SSC) ultimately fell to the Tars (10-2, 4-1 SSC), 14-9.
Â
Jacobs registered the sock trick for the second time this season and the fourth time in his career, doing so on eight shots on goal. His six points paced the Eagles on the night, while
Pete Abbes added a goal and an assist for two points, while
Christopher Harper and
Marcus Needham each added a tally to the cause.Â
Â
In goal was
Carter Groezinger, who picked up his third start this season. Despite the 14 goals allowed, the sophomore keeper was a big reason why the Eagles were able to remain in the game throughout. Groezinger ended the 60 minutes with 16 saves, tying his second-best performance as an Eagle.Â
Â
A big first quarter propelled the Tars to an early 5-0 lead after 15 minutes. It wasn't until the midway point of the first that the Eagles were able to get their first good looks on offense. Though RC tallied the five goals, Groezinger made four big stops in the frame to keep things manageable.Â
Â
The Eagles ticked up a notch in the second, however. Rollins made it 6-0 with 9:14 left to play in the half, but then Harper notched the first Embry-Riddle goal of the day. He found a crease on the right side and drove to the net to put the Eagles on the board at 9:06. Shortly after, Jacobs notched his first of the night with a bouncing goal to make it 6-2. The Tars closed out the half with a goal of their own though, making the halftime score 7-2.
Â
ERAU enjoyed by far its best quarter after half time. Needham kicked things off with a goal at 12:56, then less than 30 second later, Abbes rocketed in another to make it 7-4. Then Jacobs went off for two rapid-fire scores at 8:51 and 8:33 to pull the Eagles within one goal, down just 7-6.
Â
Rollins retaliated with a goal less than a minute later, but Jacobs cut the lead again at 5:58 with an unassisted score. The Tars answered once again, but once again so did Jacobs at 4:20, maintaining the one-goal deficit at 9-8.
Â
But RC reeled off the next five goals of the game between the third and fourth periods, including two man-up scores, extending the lead to 14-8. Jacobs completed the sock trick at 3:14, but it was too late as the Tars were able to escape with the win.
Â
Up next, the Eagles will host Saint Leo on Saturday and will honor its senior class before the game at 3 p.m.
