Softball Steals Series From No. 25 Sharks

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After taking the series opener from No. 25 Nova Southeastern on Friday, the Embry-Riddle softball team secured the series with a 2-5, 8-5 doubleheader split on Saturday at Radiology Associates Field. It was the program's first three-game series win over a ranked opponent since the Eagles took two of three from Rollins in 2019. Embry-Riddle (26-17, 9-12 Sunshine State Conference) still has won every series against the Sharks (28-12, 13-8 SSC) at home and is 13-8 all-time versus NSU with a 10-2 mark in Daytona Beach.

The Eagles pounded the ball all series, picking up 16 runs and 33 hits over three contests, including a season-high 13 hits in the series finale.

GAME 1 | No. 25 Nova Southeastern - 5, Embry-Riddle - 2

NSU loaded the bases in the first inning with just one out, but right fielder Sydney Linn flexed her cannon when she caught a flyout and sent a rocket of a throw to Katriana Bain at home to apply the tag on a baserunner attempting to score.

However, the Sharks did eventually score first in the fourth with an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk. Embry-Riddle answered immediately in the bottom of the inning. Raissa Bianco walked to start the frame and stole second. A fly ball moved her to third before she later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-1.

Nova Southeastern's lead ballooned to 5-1 in the fifth due to a pair of free passes and three singles. Once again, the Eagles responded in the bottom of the frame. Two singles and a fielding error had the bases loaded for Emma Wood, who took a base on ball to give ERAU its second run.

In the sixth, Wood picked up a ground ball and tossed it to Kerry O'Sullivan on second who then fired to Karina Ortiz-Munoz at first for a 1-6-3 inning-ending double play.

An inning later, O'Sullivan flashed the leather by making a diving catch at shortstop for the final out.

Macchia went a perfect 3-for-3 from the dish in game one, which was a season-high in hits. Bianco also contributed, going 2-for-3 with a run. The junior also stole her 16th base of the season and 21st of her career, which ranks tied for the ninth-most in a single season and in a career.

Mallory Kinahan (L, 7-7) struck out four batters in four innings. Ava Domenici recorded an out in relief, and Wood closed out the final 2.2 innings from inside the circle with no runs allowed and one strikeout.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle - 8, No. 25 Nova Southeastern - 5

This time it was Bianco's turn to make a gold-glove catch as the second baseman went full extension to rob the Sharks of a hit just two batters into the game.

After NSU scored twice in the top of the third, Embry-Riddle answered the call with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Wood reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to third when Shelby Morse singled to right. Wood then caught the defense off-guard when she sprinted home while the right fielder stood with the ball in right field unaware of the unfolding situation. Back-to-back singles from Ortiz-Munoz and Bain tied the game at 2-2. With the bases juiced, Linn put a ball in play that escaped through the second baseman's legs and out to right for another run scored. Lastly, a passed ball brought Bain in to make it a 4-2 contest.

A leadoff double and two straight sacrifice bunts cut ERAU's lead to just one run in the fourth. O'Sullivan made another incredible play in the field in the fifth as she recorded an over-the-shoulder catch in shallow left.

Two quick outs in the bottom of the fifth had Ortiz-Munoz start a two-out scoring surge with a single down the right field line. Bain followed with an RBI double and Linn and Lauren Latoria produced base knocks to bring in Bain to now lead 6-3.

Four singles in the sixth saw the lead reduced to just one run again at 6-5, but a throwing error and a sac fly from Morse pushed the home team back ahead by three at 8-5.

A leadoff walk was erased in the seventh when O'Sullivan, Bianco and Ortiz-Munoz turned a textbook 6-4-3 double play, and the rest was history.

Ortiz-Munoz became just the 10th Eagle ever to tally four or more hits in a game. She also scored twice. The graduate student's four total bases gave her 154 for her career, which is now the eighth-most ever by an Eagle.

Bain accumulated three hits in four at-bats with a pair of runs and RBIs.

Bianco increased her hit streak to seven games with a 2-for-4 performance and one run scored.

Latoria drove in a run for her 59th career RBI, tied for the seventh-most all-time.

O'Sullivan amassed eight assists in the field today to move into fifth on a program's top-10 single-season list. Also of note, Bianco's two assists on the day pushed her up into eighth on the top-10 career assist list with 124.

Morse (W, 12-7) lasted six innings inside the circle to earn the win. It was the Napa, California product's 40th career start and 44th career appearance, which rank tied for fifth and ninth on the all-time lists.

Wood then came in to record her fourth save of the season in the seventh inning.

The Eagles hit the road for the next two weeks, beginning with a series at Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday, April 19 at 6 p.m.
