Softball Splits Doubleheader With Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team started Friday's doubleheader strong with a 3-1 series opening win over Florida Southern before the Eagles' comeback came up short with a 9-7 loss in game two. ERAU (29-19, 12-14 Sunshine State Conference) sits at a 15-5 all-time record against the Moccasins (16-31, 8-18 SSC) and is 8-3 on the road.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle - 3, Florida Southern - 1

The first half of the game was a stalemate as both teams combined for just five hits over the first four innings.

Embry-Riddle stood tall defensively in the third. Florida Southern placed a runner on third with no outs, but the Eagles were able to retire the next three batters to preserve the tie. Then in the fourth, Ashton Aycock fielded a ground ball at third to strand a pair of Mocs in scoring position.

The Eagle offense eventually broke through in the fifth when Mia Macchia reached base with a walk. A single by Raissa Bianco then put two Eagles on. ERAU attempted a double steal when the catcher threw to third despite nobody covering the base. This allowed Macchia to race home for the first run. After Delaney Morgan was hit by a pitch, she took off for second trying to bait a throw down, which she successfully did. Bianco proceeded to steal home to make it a 2-0 game.

FSC got one back in the bottom of the inning with a triple and a single to cut the Blue and Gold's lead to one.

A leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth had the home team threatening, but Katriana Bain snagged a pair of foul balls to record two quick outs, and the Eagles eventually exited the inning with the lead intact.

Sydney Linn opened the seventh with a single down the right field line and Macchia followed with a base knock up the middle to increase ERAU's advantage to 3-1.

Macchia increased her hit streak up to six games with a perfect 2-for-2 performance with one run and an RBI. Bianco and Linn recorded the Eagles' other two hits and runs.

Shelby Morse (W, 15-7) pitched her third-straight complete game and earned her seventh-consecutive win. The sophomore allowed just one run and rang up a couple of batters.

GAME 2 | Florida Southern - 9, Embry-Riddle - 7

The bats got going early when Bianco and Morgan produced singles in the first to get the visitors out to an early 1-0 lead.

In the second, Linn unloaded on a pitch and burned the left fielder for an RBI triple that brought pinch runner Leah Oberkehr in to score. Kelsey Kressler then stepped in and smacked a sac fly to center for the team's third run of the game.

Unfortunately, things unraveled in the bottom of the second and the third as Florida Southern scored eight times on eight hits and one error to put the Eagles behind 8-3.

Macchia made a spectacular diving grab in left in the bottom of the fifth, but the Mocs added another run to make it a 9-3 contest.

However, the Eagles tried to claw back into the game in the sixth by loading the bases thanks to back-to-back singles from Lauren Latoria and Emma Wood and a base on balls issued to Kressler. Morse was then called up to pinch hit, and she delivered a base hit through the right side for a 9-4 score. With the bases still loaded, Macchia came up clutch with a bases-clearing single right to bring the Eagles within two.

After Embry-Riddle retired the side in order in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles managed to bring the potential tying run to the plate in the seventh, but the comeback attempt came up just short.

Latoria was a problem for Florida Southern in game two with three hits in as many at-bats. Morgan also was perfect at the dish (2-for-2) with an RBI, and Macchia drove in a season-high three Eagles while increasing her hit streak to seven contests. Additionally, Bianco scored twice with a hit in three at-bats.

Mallory Kinahan (L, 7-9) lasted 2.1 innings inside the circle before Ava Domenici took over for the final 3.2 innings. Domenici did well in her appearance, holding the Mocs to just one run on two hits during her stint.

The series concludes with game three on Saturday at 1 p.m.
