Morse Shuts Out Florida Southern; Softball Wins Rubber Match 5-0

LAKELAND, Fla. - It was another dominant performance inside the circle for Shelby Morse as she and the Embry-Riddle softball defense limited Florida Southern to just three hits in a 5-0 victory on Saturday. That marked the team's eighth shutout of the season and its fourth-consecutive series won. Embry-Riddle (30-19, 13-14 Sunshine State Conference) improved to 16-5 all-time against the Mocs (16-32, 8-19 SSC) and 9-3 on the road. The Eagles have now won six of the seven series versus Florida Southern.

Just like in game two of yesterday's doubleheader, the scoring began with an RBI bloop single to left from Delaney Morgan that allowed Raissa Bianco to come home in the first. An inning later, Mia Macchia made a high-quality over-the-shoulder catch in left field to end the frame.

Embry-Riddle increased its lead in the third. Bianco led off with a double down the left line and managed to escape a pickle to dive safely into third. That allowed the junior to score on a ball that Shelby Morse deflected off the pitcher for a 2-0 lead.

Defensively, the Eagles cruised through the first five innings. Morse retired the side in order in each of the first three frames and needed only 12 pitches to record the first six outs of the game.

ERAU's stout defensive play continued in the fourth when Kelsey Kressler reached into the opposing dugout to make a catch on a foul ball to strand a Moc on second.

The bats got hot again in the fifth. Bianco and Macchia tallied back-to-back hits to put the first two batters on base. Morgan put a ball in play, and the pitcher overthrew the first baseman, which allowed the two Eagles on base to race home. Morgan scored soon after on a ground ball by Morse to increase the Eagles' lead to 5-0.

FSC did notch a pair of hits in the sixth, but the Eagles escaped without any damage done and then faced the minimum in the seventh to earn the win.

Bianco tied her single-game career high in runs with three while also going 2-for-3 at the plate. Morse drove in a pair of Eagles with one hit over four at-bats.

In the circle, Morse (W, 16-7) won her eighth-straight game, held the Mocs to just three hits, and struck out a batter. The victory moved Morse up into a tie for fourth for the most wins in a single season by an Eagle. It's also her 24th career win, tied for the eighth-most all time.

Kerry O'Sullivan also moved up in the record books. Her assist gave the sophomore 95 on the season, which ranks tied for fourth in the history of the program.

Also of note, Leah Oberkehr broke a three-way tie for the ninth-most career stolen bases by swiping the 21st bag of her career.

Just one series remains for the Eagles as Embry-Riddle returns home next week to face Eckerd. The series begins with Senior Night on Friday, May 3 at 6 p.m.
