DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — No. 6 Embry-Riddle Women's Tennis (12-6, 4-4 Sunshine State Conference) dropped a close matchup, losing to the No. 2 Barry University Bucs (14-3, 7-1 SSC) 4-3, marking the fourth time the Eagles have lost to a top-five team by that scoreline.
The Eagles struck first in the No. 1 doubles, with the No. 19-ranked duo of
Itxaso Blanco and
Laura Cuesta Bret scoring a dominant 6-1 victory against Ailen Crespo and Clara Versier. The Buccaneers responded in the No. 2 spot, as the No. 38-ranked pairing of Dinara Alloiarova and Viktoriia Dema won 6-2 over
Maja Issler and
Carla Cabero del Hierro to tie the game score at 1-1.
The doubles point came down to the No. 3 matchup, where Barry's Nathalia Gasparin and Angela Leweurs defeated
Jessica Christa Wira Hadipoernomo and
Kaylee Kirivong 6-4, giving BU the doubles point.
Barry extended its lead to start the Singles, as Versier won 6-2, 6-0 against
Alessia Tripaldelli in the No. 6 slot. The Buccaneers then went up 3-0 after the No. 41-ranked Dema defeated No. 61 Issler 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles.
BU clinched victory in the No. 4 spot, as Alloiarova won 6-1, 7-5 against Cabero del Hierro to make it 4-0. The Eagles then got one back in the No. 1 matchup as No. 30-ranked Blanco won 7-5, 6-3 against Crespo.
Cuesta Bret made it two wins in a row for the Eagles, losing the first set 6-7 (0-7 tiebreaker) before winning the second set 6-2 and the 10-5 tiebreaker to take the No. 3 singles against the No. 24-ranked Alina Michalitsch. Wira Hadipoernomo lost the first set 5-7, but won 6-3 in the second set and 12-10 in the tiebreaker to win against Leweurs at the No. 5 slot to make it a 4-3 final score.
Embry-Riddle will travel onto Florida's west coast next weekend, as they are set to take on the Eckerd Tritons on Saturday, April 13. at 1 p.m. in St. Petersburg.
