Barry Steals Series Opener from Eagles Baseball, 8-4

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle baseball team had its seven-game win streak snapped on Friday as Barry toppled the Eagles in the series opener, 8-4. The Eagles (30-18, 16-12 SSC) and Buccaneers (27-21, 15-13 SSC) will meet tomorrow for games two and three in the important conference showdown.

It was a pitchers' duel for much of the evening, as ERAU threw its ace Dillon Moran, while Barry showed Angel Cespedes. Barry notched the game's first run in the top of the third as both hurlers kept the bats quiet until that point.

Moran would finish the night with five runs allowed, only one earned, on five hits and two walks to six strikeouts. Max Meyer, John Barone, Jon Shields and Jacob Hoppe each worked an inning to close things out in the loss. At the plate, ERAU had multi-hit efforts from Timo Aracena, including his two-run homer in the fifth, Chase Bruno, AJ Marinello and Matthew Coker

BU used a single to right to take the lead in the third and held it until the fifth inning when the Eagle bats finally awoke. Timo Aracena sent a moonshot over the right field fence to give the Blue and Gold its first runs and the first lead of the night.

But an inning later, Barry used six runs in the sixth inning to take a mountainous 7-2 lead in the waning innings. The Bucs added another in the seventh to go up 8-2, before ERAU started to claw back into things with a score in the eighth, a single from Dillon Lifrieri that scored Tyler Castelli, and one more in the bottom of the ninth, when Chase Bruno singled home Aracena with two outs to make it 8-4. But it was too little too late for the Eagles as the Bucs jumped out to a 1-0 series lead.

The two clubs will continue the season-finale tomorrow with a double header beginning at 1 p.m.
