SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team's 2024 campaign came to an end in the opening round of the NCAA II South Region tournament on Monday. The 11th-ranked Eagles, who were seeded sixth in the eight-team bracket, fell to fifth-ranked and third-seed Rollins 4-0 at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
The first doubles win of the afternoon went to the Eagles' No. 38 tandem of
Fernando Alonso and
Caelan Potts who avenged a loss to Guillermo Castaneda and Charlie Purtino in the Sunshine State Conference tournament with a 6-1 win at the second spot. The Tars managed to even things up with Efe Comu and Nico de Giacomo's 6-4 win against
Safar Rasulov and
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo at the third position.
The match at No. 1 doubles saw both teams hold serve to force a tiebreaker. The deciding game went to the 11th-ranked Rollins team of Luke Quaynor and Richard Storiberer who held off 36th-ranked
Joshua Nuyts and
Michele Iftimie 7-6 (1) to give the Tars a 1-0 edge heading into singles.
Rain halted singles play briefly and following the delay, Castaneda increased the Tars' lead to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Potts on court five. Iftimie and Alonso both won their first sets, and Diaz Rodrigo bounced back from a first-set loss to top Putrino 6-0 to force a third set. But the Tars secured the two points they needed as No. 28 Comu bested No. 31 Rasulov 6-4, 6-1 on court one, and Quaynor topped Nuyts 6-4, 6-4 on court two to take the win.
Monday's match marked Embry-Riddle's third appearance in the NCAA II tournament field an was the final collegiate match for seniors Alonso, Potts,
Niklas Gesslein and
Alex Neuman. The Eagles wrapped up the season with a 15-8 overall record.
