DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – On the heels of five top-10 finishers, including
Rylan Malarchick's fourth-place time, the Embry-Riddle men's cross country team ran away with a first-place finish in the 2024 ERAU Cross Country Classic on Saturday. The Eagles attacked a field of 12, including Division I foes Seton Hall and Bethune-Cookman. ERAU finished with a score of 35, ahead of Seton Hall (44), Florida Tech (104), Ave Maria (114) and Seminole State College (172).
The race plan for the three-loop course, executed flawlessly on the notoriously challenging run, was to keep pace on the first loop, set up the second loop for a big move in the final stage. Just behind Malarchick (4th - 26:28.7) finished
Joseph Koraya (6th - 26:35.2),
Nicholas Scarangelli (7th - 26:37.1),
Tayan Benson (8th - 26:46.5) and
Ethan Stout (10th - 26:54.6) all in the top-10.
Malarchick was a few seconds behind is PR, but posted a best at the ERAU Classic. Koraya's first collegiate 8K was a success, marking his second top-10 finish this season so far. Running the Classic for the first time as a sophomore, Scarangelli picked up a solid time en route to his second top-10 finish in 2024 as well. Benson smashed his PR on the home course by almost two minutes, coming within 0:46 of his 8K personal best, while Stout also collected his home-course PR by nearly two minutes as well.
Lucca DiMario (12th - 27:00.3),
Andrew Stowe (13th - 27:02.9),
Leo Borjon (17th - 27:32.6) and
Jacob D'Aleo (20th - 27:39.9) all finished in succession in the top-20 to aid the Eagles' scoring. DiMario wrapped up his first collegiate 8K with the 12th place finish, while Stowe, competing healthy for the first time this season, grabbed his best Classic time as well. Borjon, a freshman, improved his finish markedly after a 45th-place finish in the 6K Holloway Opener a couple weeks ago, and the senior D'Aleo was just seconds off his 8K PR, nabbing his best time on the course in his career.
Tristan Hindorff (28th - 28:15.4),
Tristan McWilliam (29th - 28:20.0),
Aleksander Schade (35th - 28:34.4),
Micah Blair (42nd - 28:58.9),
Ryan Musil (45th - 29:08.3), and
Carter Bergeron (53rd - 29:31.5) wrapped up the rest of the Eagle 15-man pack. The strong finishes across the board allowed the Eagles to take their fourth first-place ERAU Cross Country Classic finish in the last five years.
ERAU is on the road again next week as the Eagles travel to Tallahassee to take part in the FSU Invite, beginning their run to the post season with important regional races upcoming.
