Volleyball Begins 2024 Campaign With Two Victories to Open Bahama House Classic

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team continued a couple of lengthy winning streaks by sweeping Georgian Court and UNC Pembroke during the first day of the Bahama House Classic on Friday. The Eagles (2-0) have won every home and season opener dating back to the 2018 season. It was an all-around spectacular performance across both matches, with ERAU averaging 14.3 kills, 15.8 digs and 3.3 blocks per set. Additionally, Embry-Riddle held the opposition to a hit percentage below .100 in all six sets.

MATCH 1 | Embry-Riddle - 3, Georgian Court - 0

From start to finish, Embry-Riddle was in control against Georgian Court (0-1). ERAU showed no signs of early-season rust as the Eagles hit .538 in the first set. Embry-Riddle vaulted out to an 11-2 lead partially due to a trio of blocks from Dana Gibbons. Later on with the score 18-10 in favor of the home team, the Blue and Gold went on a 7-2 run to close out the set with the freshman Fifi Harvey stepping in to record a pair of kills.

In set two, the Lions took control early on. Four unanswered points sent Georgian Court ahead 4-2, which grew to 13-7. From there, the home team rattled off eight consecutive points ignited by three successful spikes from Isabella Rujano in a four-point span. Embry-Riddle then closed the set by taking nine of the last 11 points to secure a two-set lead.

Four points into the third, the score was level at 2-2. Then, the Eagles notched nine consecutive points and 13 of the next 14 scores to leap out in front 15-3 on a run that concluded with a trio of kills by Jaden McBride. Embry-Riddle cruised to a 25-10 third-set win to earn the season-opening victory.

McBride and Rujano shared the title of top attacker as each registered 13 kills. Rujano also contributed 14 digs for the program's first double-double of the season. In her first collegiate match, Ashlyn Koerner led the squad in assists with 19 while Lexie Hage followed with 18.

As a team, the Eagles racked up 13 blocks as a team with eight different members picking up a block assist. Gibbons led the way with seven block assists.

MATCH 2 | Embry-Riddle - 3, UNC Pembroke - 0

After trading a pair of matches in 2022, the two programs reunited in a match that was anticipated to be tightly contested. It lived up to the hype in set one as both teams traded blows early on to sit tied at 4-4. Five straight points with two consecutive aces by McBride saw the Eagles take a 9-4 lead. It was the first of three 5-0 spurts in the set. In the end, ERAU more than doubled up the Braves' (0-1) score, winning 25-12 with the help of Rujano's seven kills and six digs.

UNC Pembroke retaliated in the second with a 6-1 start, but the Blue and Gold slowly chipped away until the score was 19-18 in favor of the visitors. At that moment, ERAU pushed heavily to claim eight of the last nine tallies for the 25-20 set win.

Set three was more of the same with the Eagles taking a 8-1 lead to start. With the set firmly in hand at 20-6, freshman Stella Weisbrod stepped on the court and recorded her first collegiate kills in back-to-back fashion. The set was then captured 25-12 for the second sweep of the day.

As a team, the Eagles held the Braves to a -.021 hit percentage, the lowest by an opposing team since Sept. 9, 2022 against Saint Leo. That included a hit percentage of -.2 in the third set by the visitors.

Rujano racked up another double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs. Koerner bested her total from the first game with 21 assists in game two.

The Bahama House Classic concludes for the Eagles on Saturday with a 6:30 p.m. match against in-state rival Flagler.
