DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Following a lightning delay on Saturday evening that pushed their game to a Sunday morning kickoff, the Embry-Riddle men's soccer team faced a roller coaster match against Georgia Southwestern resulting in a 2-2 draw. Despite the delay and humidity the Eagles started the game with high energy.
Just three minutes in,
Sandro Henning's steal and precise through ball set up
Fabian Hilpert, who scored his fourth goal in two games. The Embry-Riddle defense held firm, denying the Hurricanes a goal despite facing 10 shots, seven corners, and requiring four crucial saves. The Hurricanes' problems increased when Sam Bruns was shown a straight red card in the 41st minute for a dangerous tackle, leaving them down to 10 men. The first half concluded with the Eagles leading 1-0.
In the second half, Georgia Southwestern took control of the game, dominating possession even with their reduced numbers. Just seven minutes after the break, Axel-Ambroise Gravel's cross found Jose Monteagudo, who equalized with a shot into the lower left corner. The Eagles' defense struggled to regain their earlier composure, and they allowed another goal in the 82nd minute as Gravel scored with an assist from Andres Melendez.
With the possibility of an upset looming against the 10-man Hurricanes, ERAU found a dramatic equalizer. A perfectly timed long cross from
Jacopo Magnani found Henning in the box, who delivered a well-placed header into the bottom left corner with just three minutes remaining. This freshman Magnani's first assist and point of his collegiate career. The match ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Eagles return to the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium on Tuesday to take on Flagler University at 6 p.m.
