Volleyball Scares Top-Ranked Tampa in 3-2 Loss

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Five-set thrillers have become the norm for whenever Embry-Riddle Volleyball and the Tampa Spartans meet inside the ICI Center, and Friday's matchup was no different. The Eagles and No. 1 Spartans battled it out in a five-set affair, but it was visiting Tampa who came out on top.

Embry-Riddle attempted to pull off a reverse sweep by taking sets three and four after the Spartans claimed the opening two sets. The Eagles handed Tampa its worst set loss of the season in set three, a 25-11 victory. ERAU was toe-to-toe with the Spartans in the fifth set, tied 10-10, but the visitors pulled away to take the set 15-11.

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • Tampa leads the all-time series 23-0

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Two blocks and five kills had Tampa ahead 7-3
  • From there, Isabella Rujano used a kill and an ace to aid the Eagles on a 4-0 run to even the score
  • Tied at 10-10, the Eagles tallied three-consecutive points to force the Spartans to spend their first timeout (13-10)
  • Tampa regrouped and took six of the next eight rallies to steal the lead at 16-15, causing Embry-Riddle to pause play
  • The Spartans stretched the 4-0 run into a 9-0 spurt with a pair of blocks to give the Eagles a five-point deficit
  • Tampa eventually won, 25-21
Second Set
  • Serving was tough to start the second set as three of the first four points come from service errors
  • The two sides traded points (5-5) until Tampa utilized another lengthy run, this time 8-0, to jump ahead 13-5
  • The Eagles did string together a 5-1 streak thanks to a couple rejections from Haley Manjack to get within five (18-13)
  • However, the Spartans took seven of the last nine points with four kills from Tess Schrenger to go up two sets to none (25-15)
Third Set
  • ERAU came out firing in the third to the tune of four-consecutive scores to lead 4-1 and cause an early Spartans timeout
  • That turned into a 6-0 run, and eventually the Eagles used that and another six-straight points to rocket out to a 15-3 advantage with nine successful spikes
  • Tampa did create its own 5-0 streak but could only get within eight
  • ERAU claimed the last six rallies with the help of a pair of kills from both Manjack and Dakota Zieman
  • The Eagles held strong defensively as they limited Tampa to just six kills
Fourth Set
  • ERAU rode the momentum into the fourth set with a 5-3 lead
  • The Spartans returned to go up 10-8 when the Blue and Gold took the next three points and nine of the next 11 with a trio of kills from Zieman and five-straight attacking miscues from the visitors, two of which were blocks involving Kailey Hrbek
  • Fifi Harvey added a pair of kills for a 4-0 streak to improve the lead up to seven (22-15)
  • Tampa returned to its top attacker Connor Rahn for three kills in a row, but ERAU closed out the set 25-20 to even the match
Fifth Set
  • A Zieman kill and Tampa attacking error gave the Eagles their first lead of the set at 5-4
  • A 4-1 streak by the Spartans with two blocks and as many kills had Tampa out front 10-8
  • However, an attacking error by Tampa and a block from Hrbek and Zieman led into a monstrous roar from the crowd and a tied set at 10-10
  • Unfortunately, the Spartans emerged from their timeout to take five of the next six rallies to foil the Eagles' upset bid, 15-11
