Volleyball Sneaks Past Florida Southern

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The 2025 Embry-Riddle Volleyball season has been one filled with excitement and seemingly endless thrilling matchups, and Saturday's match was no exception. The Eagles managed to fend off Florida Southern in five sets, its eighth five-set match this season and fourth in the last seven contests.

The Mocs made late-set charges in the first, fourth and fifth sets including an 11-2 streak to end set four, but Embry-Riddle stood its ground to secure the 3-2 win. In total, the match featured 44 ties and 16 lead changes.

Embry-Riddle did most of its damage inside as middle blockers Haley Manjack and Kailey Hrbek combined for 23 kills in 59 attacks with no attacking errors and two solo blocks with nine block assists.

RECORDS
Embry-Riddle - 13-8, 6-5 SSC (5th)

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • FSC leads the all-time series 14-7
  • The Eagles are 6-4 at home against the Mocs
  • The two teams split the season series last year
  • Five of ERAU's seven wins in the series have been sweeps
  • The home team has won nine of the last 10 meetings

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Embry-Riddle used kills from four different Eagles to take an early 5-3 lead
  • With the Blue and Gold ahead 9-6, Florida Southern used a 6-1 run to claim a 12-10 advantage
  • Out of a timeout and down 17-15, ERAU went on a 5-2 spurt to reclaim the lead at 20-19 and force a Mocs timeout
  • The break didn't matter as a kill and block from both Hrbek and Isabella Rujano sent the Eagles up by four (24-20)
  • However, FSC fought off four set points to level the score, but successful spikes from Rujano and Dakota Zieman put the set away with a 26-24 win
Second Set
  • Manjack took control of set two with a trio of kills to propel the home team out to a 7-2 lead, along with back-to-back aces from Stella Weisbrod, one of which was received and deflected off the noggin of a FSC staff member sitting on the bench
  • Ahead 11-6, three Blue and Gold attacking miscues, two of which were from blocks, aided Florida Southern in scoring five unanswered points to tie the score
  •  Later on, Zieman used three teardrop attacks over the blockers to put ERAU in front, 19-17
  • Neither side gained more than two points of separation the rest of the way, but it was the Mocs who took the set, 25-23
Third Set
  • The close and competitive play carried over into set three with FSC's 9-7 lead being the largest lead to start the set for either side
  • That was until seven errors by the Mocs sent the Eagles on an 11-1 spurt that contained eight-unanswered tallies (18-10)
  • Another four attacking miscues increased ERAU's lead to double-digits (24-13) and Embry-Riddle cruised to a 25-15 set win
Fourth Set
  • The Mocs turned a two-point deficit into a two-point lead with a 4-0 run due to a pair of kills and rejections
  • Following Embry-Riddle's timeout, the Eagles took control by claiming eight of the following 10 rallies to lead by four (16-12)
  • The set appeared to be in hand with ERAU ahead 20-14, but the Mocs strung together a 4-0 run to get within two (20-18) and force Embry-Riddle to use its last timeout
  • The Eagles led 22-19 when Florida Southern surged from behind and closed the set with six consecutive points to steal the set from Embry-Riddle, 25-22
Fifth Set
  • Two kills from Hrbek constructed a 3-0 run for the home side as the Eagles took a 6-4 lead
  • Later on, a monstrous block by Hrbek and Fifi Harvey erupted the crowd and led to an FSC timeout with ERAU ahead 9-7
  • Though the Mocs managed to tie the set at 9-9, Embry-Riddle powered back ahead with a 5-1 run to reach a potential match point at 14-10
  • Florida Southern had another late-set surge to fight off three match points, but Rujano sealed the match for the Eagles with a spike and 15-13 set win
